Seashell Museum
If you are interested in sea shells, you can take South Freeway to Gulfport, where on the grounds of the local community college there is a museum of sea shells. The collection is nothing short of impressive.

Hi everyone,
I found the following link which seems great: http://www.wiredhotels.com/city/204.html
To help make the final decision, would anybody have any recommendations or experiences of a decent hotel near MD Anderson Hospital, which had good internet access?
Unfortunately this time it's not to quickly read and upload VT pages, but to keep up at work. Well, maybe an occasional peek at recent events at VT of course ;-)
Thank you in advance for your replies!
Rose
Your question intrigued me so I did some searching even though I have no first hand knowledg of Houston.
The MD Anderson Hospital website has this link which lists 29 hotels which I assume are near the hospital.

These are the hotels which appear on both the hospital list and the wiredhotel list. (The first two of the hotels used an internet service which no longer exists. According to wiredhotels.com you should verify that they still offer an internet service.)

The most convenient of the ones in this list is the Marriott!

I drove to houston, but you can fly there and arrive at Houston Intercontinental Airport.
You definitely need a car, as public transportation seemed almost nonexistant, and distances are very far.
This restaurant has a great atmosphere, is not expensive, has very good american food (great burgers). It is located in the heart of the gay district of Houston, the Montrose area. They have an absolutely lovely court yard with pretty lush plants and flowers and a terrace in the little street the restaurant is on. I insist on the courtyard and the terrace because it is rare in Houston where most restaurants overlook gross giant parking lots. Burgers.
If you go to Houston, you have to visit the Space Center! After all, Houston is where NASA-Johnson Space Center is located. That's where the astronauts train and where NASA curates the lunar rocks brought back by the Apollo missions. Space Center Houston is the museum associated with it. Permanent exhibitions are about past and present space programs and the solar system. I particularly enjoyed the "Star ship gallery" and the Moon rock exhibition. there are lots of exhibitions and stuffs for kids.
Do not miss the little train ride! That's where you go as close as you can to the "real" NASA. They change the train path from time to time. Now (2011), you can choose between 2 tours, one to the old Mission Control room and to the rocket park (including a Saturn V, like the ones that sent astronauts to the Moon), and one to the real size shuttle where the astronauts are training and to the rocket park (be prepared to wait in line on week-ends for these tours).
It is ridiculously expensive: $19.95 per person (kids and seniors have reductions, $16 on line), $5 for parking.
Space Center is opened 10-5 weekdays. 10-6 weekends.
Note: there is a detailed tour of 4-5 hours of NASA behind the scene with a guide that you can purchase for $85 called "Level 9 tour". It should be reserved in advance.
This place was built by a prominent local seafood restaurateur, and actually has two seafood restaurants inside (with so-so overpriced food). Displays are nice and well-designed, even though the space is rather small. You can take a mini train to a separate aquarium holding sharks and large fishes.
