by tmlynn21
I am moving to houston from Boston this summer I have been looking at apartment complex's and I found a few I like but dont no if they are in a safe area one is Called Westgate apartments on Winrock Blvd. the other is Oxford on Greenridge on greenridge drive could you please tell me if these are safe places to live or suggest some other apartment complex's. Thanks I greatly appreciate it.

Don't know about these 2 particular complexes, but the area is around Westheimer St. just west of the Uptown/Galleria area. Generally if the complexes are located on or just off of Westheimer, they are pretty reliable. But some around Westheimer & Hillcroft tend to be a little aged and run-down. My suggestion would be to look for complexes a little closer to the Galleria, in the Uptown area, in which case the rent will be a liitle higher, or go out further west on Westheimer towards Beltway 8, where there are many newer complexes, and the rent will be more reasonable.

I have a friend that lived in a 2br at Westgate for a long time. They were decent. It's a relatively small complex with a very mixed slew of residents. She used to park her car in the outside parking lot all the time, and there are cars parked on the street all up and down Winrock, so I would assume that crime isn't a problem. Plenty of parking within the gated lot as well. I also swam in the pool there once. It seemed nice.
Greenridge is a little more ghetto. They're all hit or miss south of Westheimer though. Check out the apartment reviews online. If possible, you may also want to drive by to look for obvious signs of problems: abandoned cars in the lot, shotty maintenance, loud noise, people just randomly hanging out in the parking lot, desperate offer signs (i.e. - "$100 Move-In Special").
Hope that helps.
Travel Tips for Houston
Bicycling is possible and pleasant in Houston!
by XenoHumph
There is a huge potential for riding your bicycle in the Houston area. First, the weather allows biking all year long. And yes, even in the hot humid summer days, it might be the best outdoor sport because the speed makes you feel a nice breeze! Second, Houston has lots of empty spaces not yet developed, especially in the suburbs. In Houston try the trails along Buffalo bayou (river that goes EW across downtown Houston), or Braes bayou (more S, near the University of Houston). Finally there are plenty of local little roads in the country side which are just great to cycle! It is very flat, however. If you want a little bit of hills, go North and Northwest of Houston (ex: Navasota area) Always wear a helmet, even in the hottest days. It might save your life! Take LOTS of water.
Assuming you had ignored my...

Assuming you had ignored my other advice and come to Houston anyway, I would have recommended the Aquarium Lounge, formerly located at 3322 West Dallas, but it was torn down to make way for a vacant lot. It used to be probably the greatest little hole-in-the-wall dive bar in urban America. In spite of its terminally seedy exterior appearance (and possibly interior appearance as well), every piece of Elvis, Marilyn Monroe, Jimmy Stewart, Humphrey Bogart, and other celebrity memoribilia in the place was the heartfelt gift of some patron to the late owner, a sweet and completely inoffensive elderly lady named Ruth Busch. She died on the premises only two days after closing for good while going through and packing up this collection in order to move out.
There was no commercial interior designer kitsch about any of this. It was completely unpremeditated. The bar staff was restricted to a select contingent of trusty souls who could be counted on to look after Ms. Ruth's interests. And when one of them on occasion needed time off, customers from among Ms. Ruth's young professional crowd would take over. I don't know any other dive where I could expect to order a beer from a schoolteacher, an architect, or a lawyer. What do you need to wear to see a vacant lot? (When the bar was still there you used to see a lot of people in suits and ties and other business attire. I doubt that's why it had to go.)
24-hour Fish Tacos!
by twentysix.two about Chacho's
This is a 24-hour restaurant that caters to the late night bar/club crowd after hours. It certainly is not an upscale place which might turn off some potential patrons. The food is fantastic but the ambiance and surroundings can get a bit sketchy at times--which can explain the occasional police presence at night. It has a huge menu with many somewhat healthy selections. I always order a two taco combination of the Grilled Fish Taco Diablo Style ($3.29) and the Shrimp Deluxe Taco Diablo Style ($3.59). The fish or shrimp is packed into a corn tortilla with avocado, tartar sauce, and a red cabbage relish. Add to that one of many different salsas and you have an awesome combination of food.
Let your wallet defy gravity at NASA
by mjdkvt
This is an extremely overpriced tourist attraction - not necessarily because of the price tag but rather the lack on anything interesting to see. The attraction is no better than years ago, when it was still free, but only now they charge you $17.95 + $5.00 for parking. The mission control and the astronaut training areas are interesting - but the main display area is the pitts.
Although bored, your wallet will certainly seem a lot lighter at your departure, around every corner an opportunity to get taken arises - prices are more expensive than the concessions at Atlanta Hartsfield airport and that's saying an awful lot.
Sam Houston Park - San Felipe Cottage
by Djinn76
This park can be considered as on open-air museum. Some buildings that are typical of a specific architecture have been moved here.
The intrance to the park is free but some tour are also organised.
This simple house was built in 1868 by German immigrants and added to the park in 1962.
