Renting a car will make getting around much easier. If you are in town for business and your wife is coming along, you might want to stay in the Galleria area. There is plenty of shopping and restaurants here within walking or short taxi distance to keep her entertained. The hotels in the Galleria are not unreasonably expensive, you can find a room for around $100.

This is a great reason to go to the travel forums here on VT. ALL of the information you are asking for is there.

At the stop of the page, where it says "Search" type in Houston.

Travel Tips for Houston

I loathe all tollways

by mwenn2100

Not just in Houston either. If you have to get anywhere during the rushhour time and have to get on the tollway and travel, allow for extra time. I went through 3 tolls on the way to the airport and probably added a good 25-30 minutes onto my drive just sitting in line waiting at the toll booths.

Anahuac Widlife National Refuge (SE of Houston)

by XenoHumph

A beautiful place to visit if you love nature, especially birds, wetlands and alligators. This preserve consist of typical bayou (wetland) and prairie of the Gulf of Mexico original landscape. Ideal for bird lovers (tons of wetland and seashore birds, and lots of migratory birds). Bring your binoculars and your camera (and your bug spray from April to November!)!
The refuge has many dirt roads so you can drive arund watching the wildlife. A few board walks are also installed above the wetlands.

Fees: free!!

Directions:
Anahuac WNR is located about 70 miles (112 km) SE of Houston (1 1/2 hour drive), on the East side of Galveston Bay.
From Houston, take I 10 East to Exit #812 (TX 61 or Anahuac/Hankamer exit). Head South on 61 for nearly four miles to the stop sign. Continue through. The road becomes Hwy. 562. Continue for approximately 8.5 miles to the fork in the road, which is FM 1985. At the fork, turn left and continue for an additional 4 miles to the main entrance of the refuge. Turn right on the easement road for another 3 miles.

What a great place!

by Emile72 about Grotto

Dining in the States is great, especially for us Europeans. I have been to quite a few in the States, but this one in particular is one of my favorites. Grotto, an Italian restaurant close to the Galleria mall (close if you have a car :)). A very warm, entertaining atmosphere. The staff is really friendly and the food is just perfect. Very nice appetizers. For lunch I tried chicken (the light menu), still my whole plate was just loaded. One of my colleagues had a pizza which barely fit on the plate. All other dishes people had looked great too. The desserts are probably the biggest surprise. I have never ever seen such huge cakes in my life. I tried the banana cream pie, just perfectly delicious.

Niko Niko's Greek

by fredaustin about Niko Niko's Greek

This tiny restraunt is in a converted convienence store--so much for ambiance, but the food is terrific! Close enough to downtown that it is full of suits for lunch. Go there for a late lunch. Stuffed grape leaves, gyros

Battleship Texas

by 10eke

Before the U.S.S. Texas became the official state ship, she served as a powerful battleship in both World Wars for the U.S. Navy. The U.S.S. Texas was commissioned in Virginia on March 12, 1914. The battleship joined the Atlantic Fleet in World War I and helped escort the German Fleet to surrender in 1918. The U.S.S. Texas then became the first American battleship to carry an airplane on March 9, 1919.
