The Heights, an old Houston neighborhood
by XenoHumph
The Heights is a planned neighborhood built between the 1890' and 1930' along, at the time, a tramway line (Yes, Houston had a tramway then...). At the time, it was the suburbs. Now it is inside the I-610 loop, in Houston itself, kind of North-Northwest part of it.
It is an extremely pleasant neighbourhood to stroll through as most of the old houses were preserved and are now restaured with love.
I particularly suggest you look at the following houses:
1802 Harvard Street (1896, picture)
1525 Cortland Street (1911, intact original bungalow)
347 West 20th Avenue (1907)
1102 Heights Boulevard (1896)
1302 Heights Boulevard (1925, library)
This neighborhood has also a opera/concert hall (Lambert Hall Performing Arts Center, 1703 Heights Blv) and a Farmers Market (every Saturday morning, see my Local Customs tips).
Location: 4 to 6 blocks along the North-South oriented Heights Blvd, between I610 and I-10. Houston.
Choose Hobby Airport
by H-TownJourneyman
Houston has 2 airports, Bush Intercontinental (IAH), and Hobby (HOU). Bush Intercontinental is by far the bigger of the 2, and the one that serves international flights. But Hobby is a lot closer to the center of town, and being smaller, is much less congested. When flying in or out of Houston, in most cases Hobby is the much easier and time saving option between the two. Bush is located about 30-45 minutes north of downtown (possibly more depending on traffic), yet Hobby is just 10-15 minutes southeast of downtown (again, possbly longer in traffic). So unless you are heading to or from somewhere on the northside of town or northern outlying areas, flying in or out of Hobby can be a lot less of a headache. If you are coming in on or have an international flight, than this tip does not apply. Hobby is actually a hub of Southwest Airlines, with many flights in and out of Houston from most major cities in the U.S. everyday. So if you have a choice of airports in Houston, for most cases, choose Hobby.
Quick Cheap Lunch
by sahel578 about Cali Sandwich
This is an amazing sandwich shop. There is not too much to choose from, but thats fine, because why mess with something that is not broken.
Simple vietnamese sandwiches.. shredded chicken, shredded pork.. crust french bread, pickeled carrots, jalopeno, mayo.. perfect.. $2.
The other entrees are pretty good as well, just not quite as inexpensive. The sandwiches are pretty big, and very filling. My favorite sandwiches is of course the shredded chicken... (maybe in my next life i'll be able to eat pork!) The crusty texture of the warm bread, the sour and crisp jullianed carrots.. the sting of the jalopeno.. perfect!
Rodeo Houston (in February)
by fredaustin
If you're in Houston in February, you HAVE to go! Not just a livestock show, there are also music concerts in the Astrodome. Go see the bull riding/barrel racing/etc., especially if you've never seen this type if thing before. Think of it as a giant county fair with cowboys.
