Relocating

by Kaajal

Hi everyone. My husband and I currently live in New York with our three kids. We have decided to move over the summer to Houston, Texas. I want to know about the good neighborhoods in Houston. I also want to know about the schools and colleges that are good there. I am searching for a good elementary, middle school, and a good college. I've heard about places called sugarland, spring, and katy. What are the positions for a pharmaceautical chemist? Do they have job openings there over there? Will I easily get a job? A area with Pakistani descent and shops are to be looked about too. It would be nice to have a mosque nearby a nice area. Thank You.

HOWDY!

Katy, Sugarland and Spring are good neighnorhoods and therefore have excellent school districts. Add to your list The Woodlands. All these neighborhoods are about 45 min. - 1 hr. from the city center where most of the universities are. Lots of good colleges here - the University of St. Thomas, Rice U, Houston Baptist U, U of Houston, etc. And don't be turned off by the distance - Houston is so, so big - if it's reachable within the hour, it's near enough! But you do need a vehicle to move around - even if only to get to the nearest Park and Ride (then you can hop in to the Metro Bus for destinations in the downtown area - to avoid parking fees).

Sorry can't help you in the job search.

Re: the mosque...We definitely have them here...I just don't know the exact locations.

And yes, I do believe there is a shopping strip here with lots of Pakistani and Indian shops. If I'm not mistaken, it's somewhere near the Galleria area.

Lemme tell you what else we have - space, lots and lots of space (compared to NYC anyway).

Good Luck!

Travel Tips for Houston

Mardi gras as much as you can

by Angelamtp1

Mardi Gras is not just for New Orleans, Houston has many parties all through the season, and Galveston Beach(30 minutes from Houston) has the jam-packed streets, parades, bead throwing, drinking crazy party scene every weekend through ash wednesday.

Shopping amongst the Nice Parts o' Town!

by H-TownJourneyman about River Oaks Shopping Center

River Oaks Shopping Center is situated where else, in River Oaks! River Oaks happens to be the nicest, richest area in Houston. So when you go here, you will see some money! But despite it's location, and it's really nice decor, this is not the shopping centers of all shopping centers in town. No big department stores here, but several of your smaller retail shops such as Ann Taylor, Jos. A Bank, and Chico's. A few nice restaurants like La Griglia and Tony Mandola's, a couple of decent bars, and the old River Oaks movie theater are also here. So I wouldn't necessarily recommend going here just to casually walk around. It is a very nice area, but there are better places like the Rice Village or the Galleria for that.

Dim Sum

by GroovyDoc about Lucky Dragon

All the dim sum favorites for a very reasonable price. Its decor is a little rustic but it's big enough that there's never a wait and very casual. The best time to go is Saturday or Sunday mornings around 10-11 am when it's full of people to get the full experience. Get an iced coffee with milk with your dim sum. Also, try the porridge!

An institution in the Clear Lake area

by XenoHumph about Frenchie's Italian Kitchen

Frenchie's is a favorite among nearby NASA employees, including astronauts. Everybody seems to know everybody at this place. Reservation recommanded on Fri and Sat nights. Nice family atmosphere. Tons of autographed pictures of astronauts and shuttle crews on the walls.
Family owned, the cooking is inspired by that of the Isle of Capri in Italy. Very nice pasta and veal dishes. Be careful, ask for the price of the specials before ordering any, they can be very overpriced for what you get. Avoid the lunch buffet, it is not near as good as the evening meals and atmosphere.

The same family owns another restaurant in the area, Villa Capri. The charm of that one resides in the beautiful tropical garden along Clear Lake where the tables are set. The food is not as good as at Frenchie's and definitely overpriced. It is located 3813 NASA Pkwy, more to the East compared to Frenchie's.

Hermann Park Area

by krackhorre

If you don't want to drive an hour outside the city to enjoy the outdoors I recommend Hermann Park. The park is very clean and offers many playgrounds and picnic areas complete with barbecue pits. Inside the park you will find a lake where paddle boats can be rented, a golf course open to the public, Miller Outdoor Theater and the Houston City Zoo. On the Northern border of Hermann Park near the main entrance you will find the Houston Musuem of Natural Science and Butterfly Exibit, The Planetarium and the IMAX theater. Hermann Park offers many relaxing, fun and educational options......trust me you won't be bored.
