Galleria Area

by GUYON

What can we do in the Galleria area. I have already read the directory of the mall so I am searching in its neighborhood.
Thanks
RAY

Hiya Ray-
The Galleria is west of Houston (quite a ways). There's a huge skating ringk in the middle of it, with skate rental and all. It's kinda cool! It's in a fairly nice area of Houston (I bought grass for my yard west of Galleria on Dairy-Ashford Road - *that* was a haul!) There's all sorts of stuff to do there. Great restaurants, theatres and shopping out the kazoo. You'll enjoy it, but you may not be too keen on the traffic.

the galleria area is about one mile from memorial park . and the park is not far from downtown . park is around 5 miles from downtown. park is about one mile accross. for may years the galleria area was called by many the real heart and center of the city.

Re: Galleria Area

warning not far from the galleria along richmond street is a area know as the richmond strip. the clubs and retraurants in this area has become a popular place for the trouble makers, drug pushers and drug users on the week ends and at night.

Re: Re: Galleria Area

there is a cool fountain, the water wall, within walking distance of the galleria. but i wouldn't go there at night. In the galleria area, the only things to do are shop and to eat and defintely DO NOT go near the richmond ave. area.

Re: Re: Galleria Area

Oh, POOP, y'all! (grin) I lived in the apartments on Richmond near Kipling Street. (Granted, there was a porno place across the street - but rather innocuous). Right in the smack of the Montrose. Has it gotten *that* bad? Well, it *was* 22 years ago, but things don't change that dramatically, do they? ;o)

Re: Re: Galleria Area

the strip starts around twice as far west of the galleria as richmond street is south of westheimer. it is not near montrose.

Re: Re: Galleria Area

by Seabiscuit

No, Richmond is only 4-5 blocks south of Westheimer. Are you saying the "strip" is east of Dairy Ashford and west of the Galleria?

Re: Re: Galleria Area

yes, richmond starts way down in montrose, but the creepy part everyone is referencing (sp?) is right near the galleria, from around chimney rock down to at least hillcroft.

Oh, okay. Thanks for the clarification. (That was all pastureland when I lived there - I'll enjoy my delusional historical rememberances of Houston - someone has to!) (grin!)

Travel Tips for Houston

Saturn Missile

by Ken_Weaver

One of the disapointments of the visit was that the stop at the Missile park at the end tour was canceled because a thunderstorm was moving into the area. I did get this distant shot of the rocket from the trolley that you ride on in the tour.

Try to Drive

by ATXtraveler

I would emphasize a few points about Houston driving:

#1 Ignore Defensive Driving rules, all Houstonians do.

#2 Do not use your blinker until you are halfway into the lane you want.

#3 Wave with all five fingers.

The Menil Collection in Houston, Texas is an incredible collection of a variety of art from tribal to modern, Egyptian to Alaskan. The Museum is free but allows no photography or electronic devices. Inspiring collections from the Menil Collection, which is operated by the Menil Foundation, Inc., and was opened to the public in June 1987 as the primary repository of John and Dominique de Menil’s private collection. One of the most significant of the twentieth century, the collection consists of nearly 15,000 works dating from the Paleolithic era to the present day. Here you can tantalize your aesthetic thirst of Pablo Picasso and Andy Warhol. Antiquarian? Better yet with art from South America, Egypt, North America, and the Greeks. It's a definite must-see when in Houston.

Kemah Boardwalk

by H-TownJourneyman

The Kemah Boardwalk is located southeast of town in the small community of Kemah, on the shores of Clear Lake, an inlet of Galveston Bay. The boardwalk is essentially the workings of the huge Landry's Restaurants corporation. Most of the restaurants in the area are owed by Landry's, and the Boardwalk Inn Hotel is part of the company as well. There is quite a bit to do here, as it is sort of a waterfront carnival type atmosphere. There are many rides and games, such as a ferris wheel, a carousel, a small train, and various amusement games to play and win prizes. The boardwalk frequently has festivals throughout the year, including the popular "Christmas on the Boardwalk", when the entire area is decorated for the holidays, and there are many events and concerts put on. As I stated, there are many restaurants here as well, most of them are of the seafood variety. And you can take a tour of Galveston Bay in one of several boat tours available. The Kemah Boardwalk is an excellent place for families to go with the kids anytime of the year.
