It's a Jungle Out There...
by msbrandysue
It's hot. It rains. That's just Houston. There are two seasons: Summer and Spring. Spring is about January-April. After April, until December, it's hot. Make sure you bring plenty of sun screen.
Let me repeat: It rains. Sometimes all day. Sometimes 5 minutes a day for 3 months. When it rains all day it floods-and fast. Be careful! I carry a small umbrella in my purse and car at all times. You may think about it too.
The bar at America's --A nice place for a drink
by monicarc about Eating / Drinking
while America's restaurant is very good and a great place to eat, there is also a great bar there, with a really good ambiance, that is a nice place to have a drink or two, to perhaps wind down after a day of shopping or working! Everytime I go, you basically see everyone wearing whatever.
Family Dining, Family Atmosphere
by spgood301 about Cleburne Cafeteria
The first thing you notice about Cleburne Cafeteria is the family atmosphere. It's run by the Mickelis family - Nick Mickelis, the patriarch, emigrated to Houston from Greece. While wating for your food, take a look at all the family photographs. It really is like being in their home.
This is a cafeteria, so you do wait in line for food. The wait is generally no more than 10 minutes, even during the lunch crush, but it's worth it. You start out ordering a salad, then the entree & vegetables, & last but not least, desert and a drink. Pay the cashier, grab a seat (seating can be a little limited, especially at lunch), and enjoy your meal. Choose from all sorts of dishes: beef, chicken, turkey, fish, just to name a few.
I'm rather partial to Cleburne Cafeteria, & always try to stop in when I'm in Houston. I feel a certain warmth whenever I'm there. And, the food's good too. I especially like the chicken breast and dressing, served from an ice cream scoop! Add a big hunk of chocolate custard pie, and I'm a happy guy.
Galveston: Don't go to Moody Gardens
by austin_writer
I just came back from a visit to Moody Gardens and found the place sad. Stay away!
I did not have too much time to spend here, so my review is going to be restricted to just one attraction- The Ridefilm.
Here is the description of this ride on the Moody Gardens website:
"Strap on your seatbelt and hold on for an incredible experience! Ridefilm technology offers the ultimate in high-impact, immersive simulation. Each 18-passenger ride is surrounded by a seamless 180° wraparound screen that fully encompasses each viewer's peripheral vision. High quality images and awesome sound combine to make you a part of the action."
Is this the same film I saw? Or are we talking about two entirely different things?
Only two things in the above description are accurate:
1. It is an 18-passenger ride
2. You must fasten your seat belts to ride
Let me tell you about the Ridefilm I saw at Moody Gardens:
1. Incredible experience? My foot! Like motion simulators? Go try the ones at Disneyland and Universal studios. Skip this excuse for a motion simulator. Perhaps that is why they coined a new term for it- 'Ridefilm'.
2. High impact? In fact, there was no impact at all, save for a few jerky movements. 3. Ridefilm technology? Duh!
4. High quality images? You see blurred images of dinosaurs.
5. Awesome sound- Yes, the dinosaurs keep growling and hissing. Period.
We entered the ride with high expectations. But what a let down it was!
Five minutes later and around 40 dollars poorer (The ridefilm is 8.95/person), we left Moody Gardens promising ourselves we would never go back.
When we were heading out, we heard a mom ask her kids, "Did you enjoy the Ridefilm?" and they barely nodded. The answer was evident from their bored faces.
The Ridefilm is not fit to be called a ride or even a film. Moody Gardens should take it off their list of attractions. But if they took off every bad ride and attractions, they would be left with nothing, wouldn't they?
Shopping at the Galleria
by schmoopy
Beautiful large shopping mall with several up-scale department stores (Lord & Taylor, Neiman Marcus, Saks), designer boutiques and a very nice interior. There are 2 Westin hotels attached to the mall (very convenient for avid shoppers). Mall also includes an ice skating rink and a health club with indoor tennis courts.
