Which Zoo is better?

by jmusta

I will be heading to Houston to visit my cousin. I will also be visiting her sister's family in San Antonio. Which Zoo is actually better to visit the Houston one or the San Antonio one.

We will definitely visit SeaWorld while we are there. I was just wondering if anyone has comments on SeaWorld and the aquarium in Houston.

Thanks for the help.

Haven't been to the San Antonio Zoo, but speaking as a zoo worker, found some pluses and minuses at Houston, tho' it's a few years since I was there. Wonderful animals and some excellent habitat exhibits but the place had a run-down, rather dull, unkempt look to it. Houston's humidity probably doesn't help. leyle

i've been to both..i think i even have pics on my san antonio page. The San Antonio zoo is better, but the Houston zoo is not to bad. Just as the other post said, the heat makes it miserable though.

Actually, the Houston zoo has been in the process of remodeling and updating the facility lately. There are some sections that have those fine water nozzles spraying from above to cool you off. Each one has some animals that the other does not. I have pictures of both of them on my web pages. One reason I would tend to recommend Houston more is that there is a lot more to see in the very same 'museum' area that the zoo is in. Hope that helps.

Travel Tips for Houston

Galveston Bay- alternative for the Family

by vok007

Galveston waters are not "all that". You will pay over 5.00 to do a beach, so instead, you can pay 7.00 for a manmade beach/water for yourself or your family. http://www.moodygardens.com/attractions.html Hit "Palm Beach" link. It's clear fresh water surrounding by sand with sunbathing lounges for the adults. Bathrooms are clean/well maintained. Free parking and next to food and other activities... the Aquarium that has penguins, etc... Butterfly exhibit, 3D fim-rides, more. For kids, Yellow Submarine and Octopus Slide. Inside the Sub, kids will find loads of action-they'll work the periscope, divehorn, control panels, water gun and more. Soft padded foam surfaces. Specially adapted for wheelchair access. It's easy to get to by exiting earlier and signs will guide you. I go here myself when I want to get away from pools in Houston. Tip: if going to do other acitivities, do them before doing water activities.. plenty of sand and has sand volleyball area as well. Other food places are on the seawall a mile away: mapquest it.

Houston Intercontinental Airport (IAH)

by ATXtraveler

Houston is the home to Continental Airlines, which is one of the largest carriers serving Houston Intercontinental Airport. IAH is located 20 miles north of downtown Houston, so make sure to take that into consideration when considering which flight to take in the morning. It is also a very large airport, so make sure you allow yourself plenty of time.

There are several carriers that service Houston, most of which are domestic.

The international carriers are Air France, British Airways, Cayman Airlines, China Airlines, Lufthansa, KLM, and AeroMexico.

Famous Texan barbecue on Kirby

by XenoHumph about Goode's BBQ

This place is famous in Texas. It serves authentic Texan barbecue fare. Nothing fancy: large wood tables with beer opener at the ends, wood benches, plastic plates, cheap wine or beer (they actually have St Arnold which is the local brewery and is excellent) you go get your food inside and eat outside. Really fun though! Try their duck, it is really good. So is the sausage.

JSC (Johnson Space Center)....

by swissgabe

JSC (Johnson Space Center). Here you can see the Mission Control of the NASA Missions in Space. There are also rockets in the Rocket Park and the only thing you will not see are Shuttles moving around. The launch and other things will be in KSC or Cape Canaveral in Florida.
But there are other intersting things to see here, especially the history of the first Appolo missions and a lot more.
Absolutely the best spot in Houston!

Houston Ship Channel Boat Tour

by XenoHumph

This an absolute amazing boat tour that allows you to see the real Houston at work, a close up of the boats on the ship channel and the industries along it. It takes one hour and a half and it is FREE! The little boat for tourists, called the Sam Houston, takes you up close next to huge tankers and bustling, hissing and smoking factories of all types. The industrial landscape is haunting. Remember that he Port of Houston ranks as the US largest port in international tonnage and second in total tonnage, it is very impressive!! A must see!!!

You have to reserve in advance by calling Monday to Thursday, 8 am to 5 pm; or you can reserve on line (webite below).
Tours take place:
Tu, W, Fr, Sat 10:30 am and 2:30 pm
Th, Su 2.30 pm
Monday, Holidays and September: closed.
