Alternative Accommodations

by rmdw

If one wanted to stay in Houston for 1 to 2 months but didn't want to spend the rates hotels charge, are there places to rent that offer a reasonable rate and yet are flexible re the duration?

I've heard a rumor that 3-month minimum rentals are the norm in Houston.

I was just in Houston (last weekend) and in some of the residential areas, I did notice that a lot of houses were up for sale. Sometimes, the homeowners can be reached and an agreement can be made to rent these houses for a few months only, specially during this difficult ECONOMIC times. Maybe you can contact a realtor and he could point you out to owners who are willing to rent out in the meantime while there are no buyers...good luck, jumpingnorman

Try vrbo.com and the Houston Craig's List for sublets: http://houston.craigslist.org/sub/
There are the typical weekly rate hotels in Houston but, if you've ever stayed at one of those before, you'll understand why it's best to look elsewhere. I stayed at one off of 290 for about a month several years ago and wouldn't return. If you're renting for a full month, then you should be able to find something better.
You may want to post on city-data.com (or on here, if you really want to) when you find some places so that you can get feedback on neighborhoods. There are some pretty awful parts of Houston.

I agree, craigslist would be a good place to check and if you do a hotel weekly rental check out the neighborhood first.

Space Center Houston at NASA...

by Dmek69

Space Center Houston at NASA is one of the nicest places to visit in Houston that is actually in Clear Lake (south of downtown Houston). The nickname 'Space City' comes to life at NASA. Space Center Houston's 183,000-square-foot building houses a full-size mock-up of the space shuttle and a Lunar Excursion Module trainer used by Apollo astronauts. Kids (and adults) can hop on the Lunar Rover, direct the space shuttle and build rockets. Spacesuits dating back to the first lunar trip are exhibited along with the largest collection of moon rocks on Earth. For more info go to www.spacecenter.org .

It is located at 1601 NASA road 1 in Houston, 77058-3145. Their phone#: 281-244-2100

Pedacito de Venezuela en Houston!

by melim19 about Miguelito's

This is a very small restaurant. Not very nice looking in the outside.. and parking is horrible.. BUT... wow.. the food is what counts and it is amazing. This seems to be the only 100% authentic venezuelan restaurant in Houston. The inside decor is very caribbean just as Venezuela. It is adorned with folklore art from the country.. (overpriced by the way, i can say that, because i saw the same stuff way cheaper in venezuela). They also do delivery.. but too bad... it is only to a three mile radius from their location! I am so far! Wow.. there is so many great dishes. If you can't decide go for a sampler. I recommend the 'national dish' of venezuela : Pabellon Criollo. Also.. go for an arepa! Just like in Venezuela!... Their Hallaca is pretty good too!

Oh yea... they have soft drinks from Venezuela too! Frescolitaa!!

Great veggie options

by larsy about The Hobit Cafe

If you like vegetarian food and/or the lord of the rings this is your place. Its tucked away in a little house decorated with lord of the rings items and mismatched furniture. I had the portobello fajitas and they were tasty. If you are looking to detox from all the delish bad food in houston this is the place.

Big people need big drinks

by LAOWAI

If you need to refill a cup this large, there is something severely wrong with your bladder. If you need two drinks like this guy, call a doctor- and FAST. And you know what? You wouldn't know it by the photo, but this guy's head is the size of a basketball!
