9 HOUR LAYOVER

by janhbc

I'll be stopping in Houston mid-march with a 9 hr layover. What can I see/do in that time. I am a middle aged woman travelling solo on my way home from Costa Rica. Is public transport safe to use in the evenings? My stopover is 1130 AM to 830PM. Thanks for any suggestions.

I really don't think you can do anything, especially if you are going to rely on public transportation. Since you will be flying into Bush, the most you could do would be to take a cab to pappasito's on I-45 and have some of the MOST WONDERFUL FOOD IN THE WORLD, tex-mex, and then go back to the airport. anything you would want to do, houston tourist stuff, is at a minimum 30 minutes away by private car, who knows how far by bus.

As Monicarc mentioned it would be great rush to do anything in 9 hours. Specially if you are in Bush airport, which is way north of Houston and most of the attractions are in south of Houston. Best thing I see for you ( if you are willing to pay for TAXI) is to go to the Galleria Mall for shoping if you need to do some. Its generally expensive due to mostly designers outfits and stuff, but you may find a good deal. Taxi is generally ~$50 from Bush to Galleria, one way. Though bus is safe to use, you cannot make anything of it, since the airport is so far from the main city attractions.
Other best option I see for you is to relax and enjoy the newly build complex of the airport, its nice and big....

the last poster is correct--the new international terminal at bush is great, tons of shops, I wandered around there last week for two hours easily and the time flew by....there is also a pappasdeaux, where you can get yummy gulf coast seafood (its not cheap though). there is a pappasito's there, but its not as good as the real restaurants.

Thanks for your replies Monicarc and Bhusal. I have decided to rent a small car and drive north to Old Town Spring for a few hours. Cheaper than a taxi and I don't mind driving./janhbc

Travel Tips for Houston

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir

by ellsasha

This beautiful Hindu temple was completed in 2004 and is the first traditional Hindu Mandir of its kind in North America. The construction material is a combination of Italian marble and Turkish limestone sent to India where it was hand carved by Indian craftsmen and exported to Houston where it was constructed into this magnificent building. Location: 1150 Brand Lane, Stafford, TX 77477

Not The Average Irish Pub!

by H-TownJourneyman about Slainte Irish Pub

Slainte Irish Pub, located in the heart of downtown right on Main St., is a popular nightspot for the trendy young crowd of Houston. The Pub is actually 2 stories, the 1st floor being more of what a typical Irish pub consists of. Big long bar area, lots of tables, and the decor is close to, but a little more modern, of what a pub an Irish Pub generally is like. But walk up the stairs, and it seems you have entered a totally different establishment altogether. This is more like a nightclub, with a small bar, and a decent size dance floor. There is also a patio area with tables just outside overlooking Main St. and the Metrorail train. They serve a large selection of Irish & English beers, and any sort of spirit for a mixed drink or shot you could possibly want. Great lively atmosphere here! Decent nightlife attire is usual, but generally no dress code

Family Style Italian

by GroovyDoc about Buca Di Beppo's

This cool restaurant is a family-style Italian restaurant in the Woodlands. They don't take reservations, so get there early and be prepared to wait about 30 minutes (drinks at the bar?). But the food is delicious! Lots of cool decor on the walls! You even order off a menu on the wall, and the everyone shares the entrees. Eggplant parmesean...and the waiter makes a mean margarita.

Nutcracker Market: Christmas Time Only!

by msbrandysue

The Houston Ballet puts on a supurb fundraiser/craft show called Nutcracker Market. It's gaining popularity as the tradition continues. It's only one weekend after Thanksgiving. It's comprised of many craft vendors selling anything from housewares to ornaments to teepees.

Alcohol is served! (The prices are outrageous though.)

I loved this event!! Don't miss it if you're here!!!

It's about $10 to park...and $10 admission fee
