That would be IAH Bush Int'l Airport, not Hobby, don't get confused when you search hotels or you'll end up on the other side of town :-) There are several affordable hotels right near the airport on JFK Blvd and Will Clayton Pkwy. I would search expedia.com or other online site for the one with the best price (and free airport shuttle) :-) The Marriott is connected to the airport but definately not the most affordable. Feel free to e-mail me directly if you have any questions.

I am from Houston and used to live right behind the airport. I recommend the Best Western on JFK BLVD. They have decent rates, it is clean and decent for the price. Usually runs about $ 45-50 per night with transportation from the airport.
Do be prepared that Houston does not have a great transit system and a taxi into town will cost you like $ 60.00 depending what you are trying to see. You would be much better off renting a car but then if you are not used to driving in extremely heavy traffic, that might not be a good idea either.
Travel Tips for Houston
Astronauts mourning
by XenoHumph
When the space shuttle Columbia exploded in February 2003, killing all 7 astronauts on board, the people of Houston reacted immediately. Within a day, there was a spontaneous monument in front of the Johnson Space Center (where the astronauts trained) made of flowers, papers and balloons. It took gigantic proportions within a few days, and created a traffic jam on the nearby avenue NASA Road One. Somebody even had a "prayer station" installed with a pastor at the ready for anybody into that type of help and support, a very american way to express oneself I would say! The whole thing was really touching actually.
Dinner & A Movie
by topmarmot about Alamo Drafthouse
New to Houston, but already well established in Austin, Alamo Drafthouse combines first run movies (& theme events), good eats and adult beverages, served at your seat.
You can download their menu from the website. I've been a couple of times and tried one of the pizzas and the Philly cheesesteak. Both were good. The only problem I've noticed is missing my mouth because it's dark and I'm trying to watch a movie. If I were designing this kind of place, I'd have the tables closer to the seats.
Oh, and no kids allowed.
Spaghetti Western

If you were driving down the street and saw this place, you might pass it by ~ I did and I lived near it for years! While back in Houston a few weeks ago, my friends & I ordered take-out from this place and I was completely amazed that it was so delicious! (And disappointed that I didn't tap into this place when I lived there). Lots of pasta dishes, a good selection of soups & sandwiches and a dizzying array of delectable entrees. I had the Veal Scallopine and it was absolutely heavenly. My friends both had the Grilled Pork Chop (a specialty of the house) and I tasted it...and wished I had ordered two entrees because it was soooooooo yummy!!! The sauce on top was amazing ~ a little spicy, a little tangy and a perfect accompaniment for the pork.

We visited the Contemporary Arts Museum in Houston to see the "Old Weird America" exhibit. I am an artist that comes from a long line of artists, so I expected funky, creative, controversial and intellectually stimulating. What I did NOT expect was the obscenity. Since when is porn shown publically? I'm not talking about cheribs wearing fig leaves or the Madonna's bosom. I'm talking about Walt Disney's seven dwarves performing sex acts on Snow White. There were actual cartoon like videos of characters performing sex acts. No restrictions were placed on entrance. No warning on the actual exhibit that the contents might possibly inappropriate for public viewing. (There was a small sign at the front door warning that some exhibits had "powerful" images and visitors might want to view them before or with younger visitors.) Nothing about needing to take little junior to counseling because some "artist" gets his or her jollies by forcing voyeurism on unsuspecting visitors. Come on, it's time to get off the snobbish artistic high horses and face reality...porn is porn. If If you want to show it, then check ID's at the door and advertise it. Don't pretend it's art and try to sneak it in under the pretense of elitism. The Contemporary Arts Museum of Houston aught to be ashamed.
Galleria Fountain
by el_ruso
Galleria mall is a major draw for both Houstonians and many visitors of the city. The mall has an ice rink inside and a collection of stores in mid to upper price bracket. Sadly, this pool is no more :(... - a victim to an ugly condo development.

Q: Houston in April 2012 "My wife and I are visiting Houston area from UK for 2 weeks starting 31st March. We are in our 50's and enjoy outdoor activities...."
A: "The weather should be pleasant, not overly hot. It does tend to be rainy but that can be hit and miss. San Antonio and Austin make for nice overnight trips, not day..."
