My worst hotel experience

I read on their web site that the two Westin hotels at the Galleria have been renovated for $28 million. They sure needed it, at least the Westin Oaks. I spent 4 nights there in june 1998. One evening when I returned to my room, I discovered that the bathroom ceiling had fallen down into the bath tub! Lucky for me I was not taking a bath when it happened. After such a shock, you would assume that the hotel management would express their regrets in some way, but no. No appologies, no flowers, no box of chocolate, nothing!

I was visiting my company's Houston office, which was in another building in this huge complex. The Galleria has everything, there is no need to ever go outside, which I never did. One day I found a door. I opened it and took a look outside. I saw a big street, the area was deserted, it felt like I was living on Mars. I was actually told that people risked beeing detained by the police if the were caught walking outdoors!

I find americans strange, the love having the biggest of everything. Like the Galleria, the "fifth largest in the country and Houston's #1 attraction". I don't see the charm of it. But I do understand the need for having an airconditioned area, temperatures reaching above 40 C.

Attached to the Galleria!

To call the Houston Galleria a shopping center would not do it justice. Add to it that there are actually two high end hotels that are attached to it! This means that if you get tired on either end of the mall, you will be able to just check in and get a room!

One of the two hotels directly attached to the Galleria is the Westin Oaks, which is located on the North side of the Galleria.
