Both he and his pioneer nurse wife Dorothy were involved in nearly all important events in the Irving area. Most of the time Gilbert was practising, he was the only doctor in the town. There was no local hospital. He earlier career was as an English teacher and as a physician he served on the Irving School Board for 10 years, the local elementary school was named for him. Gilberts was also mayor of Irving for 5 years.
