We didn't stay at the Hotel Paisano, but we did walk through it. It seemed quite nice but had a very different flavor than the Thunderbird. It was much more "Texas" right down to the animal head trophy's hanging on the lobby wall. We noticed there was a pool and a small case highlighting the role the hotel had in the movie "Giant" - which was filmed in Marfa.
The Hotel is closer to the Marfa Book Company and Maiya's, but given the small size of Marfa that's not that much of an advantage. We checked rates at both the Thunderbird and the Hotel Paisano before we left and found them comparable - a little over $110 each. Although at the Hotel Paisano you can stay in the rooms Elizabeth Taylor, James Dean or Rock Hudson slept in. (Probably not all at the same time though. Well, maybe Rock and James....)
As a rule of thumb - if you drive a domestic truck and don't understand modern art you'll probably prefer the Hotel Paisano.
If you drive a Cooper Mini and appreciate the nuances of Modern Art - check into the Thunderbird.
If we went back - we'd probably try the Hotel Paisano.
The Paisano has been nicely restored. There are a few different room sizes and prices. The room we chose was a bit on the small size, but was quite adequate. There is a small flat screen tv in each room..nice touch. It's the place to stay while visiting Marfa.
