The staff was very friendly. It was nice to have a kitchenette and we saved money on food because of that. The room was small but adequate for a four night stay. My husband and I were disappointed because the pictures showed vending machines in the guest laundry area and there were none. Also, we didn't know room service wasn't daily. Because it is an extended stay hotel, room service is only once a week. But we make our own beds at home so that was not a big deal. It was inconvenient that we had to go get our own clean towels everyday and there were no extra pillows. One nightstand per room was another small inconvenience. The room was clean and I saw no uninvited guests (bugs) in our room. We did have to go ask for cookware and some cups. There is dish soap available from the front desk but we didn't know this until after we went out and bought a small bottle ourselves. The elevator broke our first day there and was not repaired before we left. Because we both have problems with stairs and our room was on the second floor, that was uncomfortable. But it was a good location and all in all you don't expect a lot of luxury for under fifty dollars a night, so we were satisfied.

    Unique Quality: Location, location, location

Directions: state route 635 to service road 30. We did have problems daily getting back to our hotel. Kept missing exit which isn't well marked.

Travel Tips for Mesquite

The Ghost of Eastfield College

by keeweechic

Eastfield Community College was built in the early 1970s on the site of the old Motley Mansion. The mansion was owned by the Motley family – first residents of the area and was burned to the ground by vandals. The land was later donated to the community for the building of the college. The family cemetery is still on a corner of the land.

It is said that the Theater of the college is haunted by a man who watches practices of the plays. He has been reported several times in the past 20 years or so.

Lake Fork

by keeweechic

Lake Fork is on Lake Fork Creek, a tributary of the Sabine River. The lakes acreage is 227,609 and is an excellent fish habitat with record large-mouth bass,18.18lb, being caught. There are boat launch ramps at Lake Fork Bridge and on the south shore. Lake Fork is about 1 1/2hrs drive east of Mesquite.

Site of Old Mayor of Mesquites Homestead

by keeweechic

Well this may look like the Saltgrass Steakhouse and of course it is but originally it was the Galloway Farmstead site. Benjamin Franklin Galloway and his wife came to Texas from Tennesee with their son and built a cabin on this site while a 2 bedroom house was being built. There was another son, then twin sons which only lived a day. His wife died soon after. Galloway later remarried and built another 1 ½ stories to the house. They had a son who died at birth. His first son Bedford married twice and had children and was very active on the school board as well as serving as mayor of Mesquite from 1927 to 1940. One of the Galloway descendants restored the house and added another addition. The house was later moved to a more rural site in Sunnyvale and designated a Texas Historic Landmark.

On the other hand... Saltgrass is one of Texas' original restaurants that you may want to try.
