Keeweechic's Mt Vernon
Mt Vernon is the county seat of Franklin County and was first settled around the late 1830s/early 1840s. Franklin County was carved out of Titus County in 1875. The name Franklin came from Benjamin Cromwell Franklin, the first Judge in the Republic of Texas. The town grew up as a settlement near the present town square. Land titles were established soon after the Texas Revolution. By 1848 the US government established a post office and land was donated by Stephen and Rebecca Keith. Since there were two other Mt Vernon’s in Texas, the first post office was called Keith and then Lone Star before Mt Vernon became available for use in 1875. Vernon.
Early days in Mt Vernon were a made up of mixed agriculture – cotton farms, then 500,000 peach trees, watermelons and the state’s top record production of cane syrup in the 1940’s. Oil was discovered on C.G. Hughes land in the northern part of the county in 1936 which then led the economy to diversify with oil production. Light industry and manufacturing followed.
