Travel Tips for New Braunfels

by Mighty

Hey, I forgot to tell you guys that it is seasonal. The main part of the season is between Labor and Memorial Day, (but please, save yourself the trouble in August... ) all the big holiday weekends are crazy crowded, so if you enjoy the crowd (you know 10 zillion teenagers and twentysomethings, with a couple of young hip familes, and cool older folks tossed into the mix, all running around enjoying themsleves in not to very much clothing...) which many do, make your reservations and squeze on in.

Me I like a slightly more sedate pace and like to go before Memorial day, when it is still a little cold (but very nice if you are camping near the river because its like natural air conditioning) and the majority of the crowds are still pending. I miss the pace. You never know what time it is and really never care, after about 2 days at the river it's not quite so hard to remember what's really important in life.

I also really enjoy campfire cooking... It's such a challenge.

Gruene is a small town just outside of New Braunfels. Many people flock there on the weekends in good weather to eat at the Gristmill and to listen to music at Gruene Hall. Gruene Hall is the oldest continually operating dance hall in Texas and is a great place to get that authentic Texas feel if you are from out of town. The Gristmill is right behind Gruene Hall and offers spectacular views of the Guadalupe River. The menu consists of burgers, chicken, fish, salads etc.
The town itself is quaint, with many touristy shops. On Sundays you will encounter many Harley Davidsons, as this is the place many of the bikers end up after rides through the Hill Country.

Schlitterbahn (slipper road) is a water amusement park. Set on more that 65 acres, its is the states largest waterpark. There are tube chutes, river rapids, water slides, hot tubs as well as playgrounds and picnic areas. Open from April to Sept.

Riding to the caverns

We rented a motorcycle and headed into the hill country. Our route took us into New Braunfels, for a trip (to stretch the legs among othert hings) to the caverns.Natural Bridge Caverns. Worth the trip out.
