Travel Tips for Palestine
Excellent Tourist Info
by keeweechic
There are a lot of one way streets in Palestine so you need to be aware before turning into an intersection. The Driving Tours that the Historical Preservation Society puts out are wonderful. Clear and precise directions are given with well documented photos and information on the historical attractions. Be sure to pick up both books. One covers the South Side and the other covers the North Side. If you are going to Palestine, I suggest you ask the Palestine Convention & Visitors Bureau to send you information. They can provide one of the best packets I have found for cities and towns in Texas. It took 3 goes to get it but it was well worthwhile when I did. It gave me a good chance to see all that was available instead of deciding once I got there.
Railroad Displays
by keeweechic
There is a huge locomotive 610 on display which was restored to pull the Bicentennial Freedom Train in 1976. There is also an 1899 wooden T&P business car and old baggage car.

Richland Chambers Reservoir
by keeweechic
This lake covers 44,752-acres of the Chambers and Richland Creeks. Located just off of Interstate 45 when you are driving from Corsicana through to Palestine. The reservoir was built in the late 1980s and is the 3rd Largest Inland Lake. There are public boat ramps, marinas, and a lakeside campground. The lake is deep enough for sailing and for skiers. Fishing is good for the native largemouth and Florida-strain bass, sand bass, crappie, coppernose bluegill, and catfish.
Location: Hwy 287 from Corsicana to Palestine
Old Palestine High School
by keeweechic
A public school system was established in Palestine in 1881 and first classes were held at the Old Palestine Female Institute in1858. In 1915 a vote was passed for a new High School and an area within Reagan Park was chosen for this purpose. Included in the structure was a library, gymnasium, laboratories, 8 lecture rooms and an auditorium.
The building became a junior high school in 1939 and was named in 1955 for John Reagan a Palestine resident and Texas Stateman. Elementary grades were assigned here from 1966 to 1976 when the school finally closed. The building was then preserved and rehabilitated as a museum and cultural centre.
George & Mattie Schmidt House
by keeweechic
This two and a half storey house was one of the last homes built in the Queen Anne Style just as its popularity started to wear off. It was built in 1905 and has carved wood detailing of the jigsawn brackets on the porch which are unusual details as are the squared porch posts. The owner, Mr Schmidt was a blacksmith for the I &GN railroad and later the owner of the George Schmidt Hardware Store.
