San Angelo has completely...
San Angelo has completely restored Fort Concho. It is located on the Concho River. Fort Concho was originally
built in 1867 and was in service to the Concho Valley for 22 years. Its is known for housing the U.S. Army
Forces involved in frontier peacekeeping. When Ft. Concho was active it was occupied by calvary and
infantry units known by their unique Indian name , the Buffalo Soldiers. Today, it is recognized as the
best preserved Indian Wars fort because of all the extensive restoration that has been done in the past three
decades to preserve its original state. At different times of the year reinactments are produced. All soldiers,
Indians, etc are in full period costume...along with horses, ceremonial dress etc. Nothing except the occassional
sound of a present day automobile or aerial craft will remind you of the year 2000..instead you will feel as if
you've awoke in another time in history completely. It is truly amazing to watch because you ACTUALLY do feel
as if you live in the late 1800's. Christmas time is an espically wonderful time to visit Fort Concho because of
the area merchants, crafts clubs, builders, quilting clubs etc...extra special touches in each building. No modern
day electricity or conveniences are in anyway recognizeable. All trees, fireplace hearths, tables , bannisters and
wreaths are lit only with candles...natural light..and it is truly truly a site to see. Ft. Concho has twenty two
buildings in all full of period artifacts and memorabilia. So come on out to the friendliest place on earth and
step back in time. Its not only very very informative its FUN!!!!! In June of every year we have what is called Fiesta del Concho. Its just a bunch of fun. There are four or
five different stages set up along the Concho River, food booths galore, carnival booths for kids and adults alike.
And you haven't lived until you've been to an Armadillo race!!! There are boat rides up and down the historic
river, fiddlers contests, arts and crafts booths for miles and miles. Its just a good ol West Texas good time.
And if you're lucky enough to find me (or hear me is actually more like it...heeee hee) hopefully i won't
do my Fiesta del Concho Famous Flip....I took one too many steps backwards when singing with my band
one year and all of a sudden i was very very wet...and shocked. Needless to say..its still the talk of the town.
But come visit...you never know what one of us crazy texans will do.
