Wear layers
by taryn21
Bring some pants and long-sleeved shirts for the evenings...it can cool off quite a bit. Also, during the months of Feb-April, it can get pretty chilly too at times with rainy weather. Bring a light jacket. Bring sunscreen!! Other than the few cooler months in spring, it is quite warm, especially late summer. Wear sunscreen to prevent burning.
Best Grocery Store for Gourmet Foods
by lisa_lise about Central Market
Best grocery store for hard-to-find spices and foods. Don't let the valet parking option scare you--the food is not that expensive. However, I wouldn't recommend buying "normal" foods there, because you can get those much cheaper at one of the million HEB grocery stores around town. But for gourmet foods and tons of ready-made, unique meals, this is the place.
Gastronomic Fast-Food !!
by Djinn76 about Fuddruckers
There are many good restaurants in San Antonio and when I explained to a local colleague I had food in Fuddruckers, he laughed at me!!
Still, I really don't regret it, if this is a fast-food chain; it is what I would call gastronomic fast-food! You first have to choose what kind of burger you want, nothing to do with Big Mac, Double Cheese or this kind of crap, instead you will find the 'Works Burger' with bacon, cheese and mushrooms or the 'Southwest Burger' based on guacamole.
Once you have made your choice you still have to decide how many pounds of meat you want an how cooked it should be!
Good food in a friendly family atmosphere
by Jefie about Los Barrios
Los Barrios has been around since 1979 and has had numerous great reviews so it's a pretty safe bet if you want to try good Mexican/Tex-Mex cuisine. Located outside of downtown San Antonio, this restaurant has more of a family atmosphere than its "trendier" counterparts on the River Walk. The menu is quite extensive, allowing you to choose between traditional Mexican dishes or Tex-Mex favorites, and portions are very generous (at a very reasonable price). And if you enjoy your meal, you can even buy your own copy of the "Los Barrios Family Cookbook" I tried the sample platter - it was way too much food but I got to taste it all!
A Bird Sanctuary
by jinkoe
The San Antonio zoo seems to be a more intimate zoo than most. While relatively large, the animals are close; so close, in fact, there is more than one opportunity to reach out and touch an animal or feed one (against the rules).
One of the several highlights of the zoo is the rhino area. They may stink, but they seem to be pretty domesticated and willing to get close. They also appear to be willing to eat from the hands of zoo visitors.
The main attraction, however, is the wide assortment of birds at the zoo. In one area, near the "peak" of the zoo, there is an environment perfect for birds to fly freely, and the netted-in setting allows for the feeling of the woods or jungle. Be careful; the birds will dive bomb mercilessly...just be aware of where you are sitting.
