Need moderate price clean hotels in safe area on riverwalk or very near it.
by ekabl
We are planning to spend 4 week-days in San Antonio in early to mid november. Can you recommend a clean, well located hotel on riverwalk where it is safe to walk in day or evening. We will not have car but will take available tours from the hotel. We are seniors who love to walk. We don't need a pool but would like a free continental breakfast and maybe free internet.

What does "moderate price" mean to you?
The Red Roof is easy walking distance to the Alamo and the Riverwalk, has a fairly reasonable rate and, IIRC, a free breakfast.
I also stayed at the Holiday Inn Express one December and got a hot tub room for $150, so I'd imagine their regular rooms would be less. If you've never stayed at one, they have great breakfasts.

I stayed at the Hilton on the Riverwalk for $110 but booked far in advance.

$100 to $130 is moderate to me. Was the Red roof area safe to walk around at night and restaurants near by?
thanks for your reply

I have been able to get a couple really great hotels on Hotwire.com for the $99-$125 range downtown on the Riverwalk. The ones that came up when I did this were the Westin, the Hilton, the Menger, and an older hotel that was within walking distance, but not on the river. All were great, and I would recommend them again.
Travel Tips for San Antonio
Visit the San Antonio Visitor...
by KimberlyAnn
Visit the San Antonio Visitor information Center at 317 Alamo Plaza to pick up brochures, maps, and information about events and things to do. Plan to do lots of walking. The web site for the San Antonio Visitor Bureau is:
www.sanantoniocvb.com/index.shtml Favorite memories: Listening to the Inka music played on traditional instruments of the Andes as we were exploring the city, as well as a couple of fantastic meals out. We also enjoyed the racial diversity of the city.
Relaxation After Shopping
by Jmill42
Across the street from the Market is a great little park. With a monument to another war hero, there is some historical value. Mainly though, the park was a great place to sit down and relax after walking around the market for an hour. I noticed a bus stop, right on the park, so that should make this place very accesible from the rest of the city, for those travellers not having transportation.
River Walk at night
by darthmilmo
Just stroll after dark, eat on one of the many fancy restaurants, and have a good time at one of the many bars/nightclubs in the area. There are plenty of bars and restaurants to suit most of the different tastes. If not, well you can always head to the streets and walk downtown until you find something to your liking :).
A break from Mexican food
by basstbn about The Republic of Texas Restaurant
It was our final night in San Antonio; we were tired of walking, hungry, and ready for something besides Mexican food, and didn't want to wait in line to get a table on the sidewalk next to the river. So, we gladly accepted the offer of immediate seating inside this restaurant, and were rewarded with a nice meal, friendly and efficient service, and quite suitable atmosphere. Sorry - too long ago to remember, but it was probably beef. Just remember being pleased with dinner.

If you have a pass, you can go to Lackland Air Force Base. People, other than families of basic training graduates, wishing to visit the base will be required to have a sponsor with a valid military ID card.
We did have someone graduating, that was why we were in San Antonio to begin with.
The base is quite large and it is very helpful to have a car to get around.
