Travel Tips for San Antonio

Milam 300 Year old Cypress Tree

by Yaqui

One thing you will notice right away is how lush the Riverwalk is. One of the trees that the tour guide pointed out was this 300-year-old Cypress tree. Taxodium distichum is a native to the southeastern part of United States and they can grow to almost 40 M. These trees have very distinctive foliage. This beautiful tree branches twist and spiral in so many directions, which gives it such character.

Commerce Street, near intersection with Soledad Street

History: On the morning of December 7, 1835, a Mexican soldier perched in a cypress tree across the river fired into the courtyard of the Veramendi Palace, killing Col. Benjamin Rush Milam, one the commanders leading the Texan assault on Gen. Perfecto de Cos’ garrison during the Battle of Béxar. Although this incident was not a part of the Siege of the Alamo, it played an important role in events leading up to the 1836 battle. [Note: The best way to view the tree is to stand on the north side of Commerce Street, on the bridge near the intersection with Soledad Street. The tree, which has two trunks, is located near a tan colored multi-storied building.] http://www.thealamo.org/gallery.html

WOAH, Cowboy!!

by Deus_ultima about The Coyote Ugly Saloon

Barmaids dancing on the bar continuously, drinking, offering bodyshots while wiping punters to the soundtrack of rock 'n roll.

Sounds crazy? It is!! But we kept going back for more!
:)

Something to be experienced!
Even my 57year old mum loved it! Anything goes, really..

Texas to the Bone

by raevnzno about Saltgrass Steakhouse

Reminicesent of an old chuckwagon trail, Saltgrass steakhouse features steaks, chicken, and seafood chargrilled to perfection. All of their breads, soups, and desserts are made fresh daily in-house. They claim that all of their salad dressing are also made fresh daily.
Try as we might, we could find nothing to complain about at this restaurant. The service was excellent, our server even brought caraf's of coffee and tea to the table so that we never had to wait for our glasses to be refilled.

We will be back to this one again, and again, and again....... I had the coconut shrimp. It's so easy to overcook shrimp, but these were absolutely perfect! and the roasted jalapeno and pineapple marmelade was the best blend of hot and sweet.
My travel mate had the babyback ribs, and was not dissappointed in the least.
We split the 2-fork cheesecake.
Everything was excellent!

The Riverwalk at Christmas!

by msbrandysue

The Riverwalk is a fun place at any time of the year, but especially magical during the Christmas season (the month of December). There are lights in the trees lining the Riverwalk and everyone is bustling about getting Christmas gifts! There is a beautiful tree in the RiverCenter Mall plaza that is a great symbol of the giving season. Just walk around and soak up the wonderful time of year!

The River Walk

by Kodi01

The River Walk is also called Paseo del Rio.

If it was not for this famous river, the Spanish would not have come to lay down plazas and build Adobe walls.

Multi colored umbrellas line some of the restaraunts. The River walk is lined with bars and restaraunts. It is SO much fun to go there.
