Travel Tips for San Antonio

Nationality of the Alamo

by keeweechic

The largest proportion of defenders were foreign immigrants from the United Kingdom. From the 1800 Act of Union, the United Kingdom comprised: England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

Of the men that fought and died at the Alamo, 29 are known to be from the United Kingdom.

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch...

by darthmilmo

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch and it's sister attraction, the Natural Bridge Caverns are the ideal combination for a day of fun. Start the day off at the wildlife refuge, strolling around the grounds a couple times (entrance fee allows unlimited rides around the grounds, food cost extra). Afterwards, head underground to visit the caverns next door.

My Favorite Tex-Mex in SA

by lyrael about Tomatillos

The food here is a flavor explosion in your mouth. The salsa they bring to the table is excellent, but for a real treat and kick of spice, ask for the Mata La Mula (to kill a mule). It's one delcious hot mama! The margaritas and tortillas kick major butt too! Just steer clear of the puffy tacos - they are neither puffy nor authentic and you can find much better ones at dives around town. The place is always decorated beautifully with wonderful tejano music playing in the background. My favorite entrees are Tres Colores Enchiladas (3 kinds of enchiladas with different sauces and fillings - cheese, chicken, and beef with ranchera/red sauce, verde/sour cream sauce, and tomatillo sauce I think), La Bandera (same idea but all chicken), Senora plate (delicious chicken chalupa and chicken enchilada), and of course the ever wonderful and fresh chicken fajita salad.

Great Mexican Food, relaxed ambience.

by rsleisk about Paloma Blanca

Paloma Blanca is an eclectic restaurant with great atmoshphere and ambience. I had been to the restaurant when it was at its first location and it was good then. But the new location is even more inviting.

Waiting for our table we sat in the lounge area and had drinks. We sat on comfortable leather sofas and our mood was enhanced by a Guitarist strumming Mexican tunes. We sat on the patio next to a fountain and enjoyed the delicious Mexican food. Don't be discouraged by the name, Enchiladas Divorciadas, is a great entree of chicken enchiladas. Wash it all down with a Negro Modelo or a margarita.

Picturesque La Villita

by VeronicaG

La Villita was established by people arriving from the Canary Islands in 1731. In fact, it was the first private settlement of residences and retail shops in San Antonio. This part of the city owes its preservation to the advent of the l968 HemisFair. It was for that event that La Villita was spruced up and walled.

When we spent the weekend in San Antonio a few days ago, we stopped by this pretty street twice. Once to shop at a very nice jewelry shop and another day when Mexican music attracted us to a fiesta in full swing (picture #4). Couples whirled around the square, laughing and stepping quickly to the music! It was so much fun to watch.

The house where General Martin Perfecto de Cos surrendered all Mexican held lands north of the Rio Grande in 1835 is in La Vallita. This surrender angered General Santa Anna who vowed revenge, leading to the Battle of the Alamo. The home is not open for touring (picture #3).

Last Christmas we attended a mass held at the Little Chapel at La Villita, a beautiful historic church nestled in the middle of the Villita street. It was constructed in 1879 in the Gothic Revival style. Nondenominational services are held here each Thursday and Sunday at 11 am. (picture#4)

Following the service, we were permitted to take photos of the front altar. The stained glass window was stunning (picture #5)! A friendly congregant invited us to coffee hour, which was held in a gift shop behind the church.

Update: Celebrating New Year's in San Antonio was a wonderful experience. La Villita was the site for some of the festivities, which featured games for the kids, mariachi music, a Mardi Gras atmosphere and plenty of food booths.
