Perceived as one of the most flamboyant facilities in the United States, the Majestic Theatre was once the largest theatre in Texas & the second largest motion picture theatre in the United States. Located at 224 E. Houston Street in the heart of downtown San Antonio, the Majestic Theatre, during the nauseating error of segregation, was an establishment off-limits to the African-American & Mexican populaces of San Antonio.
During its heyday in the late 1930s, the Majestic Theatre was also the scene of intense civil disobedience by local civil rights activists. Nearly thirty years later in the mid to late 1960s, the theatre would eventually desegregate thanks in part to the leadership & efforts of Rev. Claude Black, an African-American civil rights activist in San Antonio.
Suspiciously enough, on December 31, 1974, the doors to the theatre would close forever as ?entertainment habits? in San Antonio changed.
