Brooke Army Medical Center

by Enya428

I am a nursing student who has a clinical rotation at Brooke Army Medical Center this summer. Does anyone know anything about this hospital? Specifically, I am interested in the Neonatal ICU, as well as Peds, Labor and Delivery, Mom/Baby, etc. ANY info would be great! Thanks! Also, how far away from downtown is the hosptial? Without a car, will I be able to get around fairly well or not? Thanks again!

Hi Anna - Welcome to VT! My husband was stationed in San Antonio in 1987 with the U.S. Army, so I ran your question past him. He said that particular hospital is the military's primary pediatric hospital, and has a great all around reputation. The hospital is not far from downtown, and there are shuttle buses that can take you almost anywhere. Because Ft. Sam Houston is a training base, most people don't have cars and rely on the excellent (and it is really excellent) public transportation, and it's cheap as well (always a plus!).

It's been some time since Brent has been enlisted, but he says it's a great place to be stationed for some time. Please feel free to email with any further questions :)

Travel Tips for San Antonio

BAT TOURS

by mtncorg

If you cannot get out to Carlsbad Caverns, then the Old Tunnel near Fredericksburg is a nice option. With over five millions bats in residence during August, the outpouring swarms at sunset are quite a sight. Times of the mass exodus and swarm duration are posted next to the upper observation area. Seats are to be found in both the upper and lower observation areas - a smaller scale of what is to be found at Carlsbad. The lower area is limited to the first 70 people who show up and there is a $5 charge - no charge for the upper area.

Casa Rio restaurant

by Yaqui

This is probably the one of the most photographed restaurants with even knowing it. What make this place very unique are all the lovely table umbrellas. Open in 1946 by Alfred Beyer and was even the first commercial businesses at River Level. Originally, an appliance store at street level, he was losing money, so he remodeled the basement to utilize that space since it was at river level and opened a restaurant. During the remodel, they even discovered remnants of a Spanish-era home, which were preserved as part of the restaurant.

great burgers

by malianrob about Dicks

The food was pretty good, mostly burgers and sandwiches and beer. The funny thing about this place is that the object is to treat the customers kinda mean but in a funny way. The waiters act like jerks to make you laugh and its done all in good fun. You know that they are playing with you and they dont take it too far. They also make hats and other things for the kids as well as the adults and you are entertained.

barbeque

by doug48 about the county line

the county line barbeque restaurant is located next to the hard rock cafe on the river walk. this unique barbeque restaurant specializes in beef ribs. there is no sliced or chopped beef or pork barbeque on the menu. they also offer barbeque chicken, smoked turkey, and baby back pork ribs. the beef ribs are worth trying. large portions moderately priced. reservations are recommended.

La Villita

by hoofhearted

The La Villita "area" is definitely convenient, as it is in the center of downtown SA within walking distance of the Convention Center, King William Historic District, The Riverwalk, El Mercado and The Alamo. La Villita is a small city block full of artisan shops. It also includes The Fig Tree, Little Rhein Steakhouse and Guadalajara Bar which are all recommended stops.

La Villita is a very clean and safe area and makes a good "base" while in San Antonio.
