MILITARY PARADES
by mtncorg
With so many military units in and around San Antonio, parades are a common sight. The vast Parade Ground at Fort Sam Houston - jog around the whole thing and you have done five miles! - is the perfect venue to hold and practice these maneuvers. It was on these grounds that my Army marching career took place - both hour-long sessions. The Medical Corps is a breed unto itself! ;-]
Trick-or-Treating Safety Tips
by Maria250
"Halloween is a very fun holiday for children. Here are some tips to make their trick-or-treating experience in San Antonio safe and enjoyable.
Small children should never go out alone on Halloween. Make sure they are accompanied by an adult or older sibling.
Children should not cut through alleyways or dimly lit areas. You should give them a set path on populated and well-lit streets.
Children should only stop at familiar houses in your own neighborhood.
Children should never enter a haunted house without a parent or older sibling.
Children should never go inside the home of a stranger or get into anyone's car.
Children should carry a flashlight or glowstick to make themselves more visible.
You should help pick out your child's costume. Make sure they can see properly through the mask and verify that the costume is fire-proof.
Small children should not carry props. If older children have props such as pitchforks or swords, make sure the material is flexible with dull tips to avoid injury if they were to fall.
If you have jack-o-lanterns outside on your porch, use pumpkin lights inside them rather than candles. Jack-o-lanterns can be easily knocked over, causing a fire. Pumpking Lights can be found at Target and Wal-Mart.
Children should not eat any candy until it is inspected by a parent. If you find any suspicious candy, call your neighborhood police department at (210)207-7273. In case of emergency, call 911.."
Drink with the Rough Riders
by RowdyTheologian about The Menger Bar
Theodore Roosevelt recruited Rough Riders here in 1898. I imagine the crowd that frequented this watering hole back then were the sort you'd want on your side in a fight.
The bar maintains its rustic charm. Hard wood, dimly lit. Simply put, a fantastic place to mellow out and throw a few back.
Another River Walk Restaurant
by VeronicaG about Michelino's
Michelino's location is excellent--it's along the River Walk; has indoor and outdoor weather-protected dining and is conveniently situated. However, the evening we chose to dine there was a little disappointing.
Before I mention anymore, though, I have to say our waiter was pleasant and the atmosphere warm and congenial. Through the window, lights glimmered in the rain. Inside, red poinsettias brightened the room, while a mariachi band strolled from table to table asking for requests. (See picture #2, please)
We began our meal with a delicious appetizer: seafood and ricotta stuffed mushrooms ($7.99) After a moment of indecision, I ordered the grilled pork tenderloin with green beans and carrots and garlic potatoes ($17.99).
Unfortunately, both of our entrees came to the table lukewarm. When we mentioned the problem, our waiter whisked our plates away and brought them back in no time at all, but by then my pork was...what's the word...chewy.
My experience was probably an isolated one, so I would give this restaurant a chance to serve up a nicely cooked, hot meal.
For every true son and...

For every true son and daughter of Texas the Alamo is almost a holy place. You must go there. It is the heart and spirit of San Antonio. To me the Alamo is a symbol of courage and freedom. I was a boy who grew up in Texas hearing stories and seeing movies about the courage of the Alamo's defenders. The history of the Alamo is a story of courage in face of overwhelming odds. It could be that having heard that story so often is why I always like to cheer for the under dog in a contest.
It is some thing like a museum now. It is not very large. I noticed most people do not speak loudly when they are inside.
