Travel Tips for San Antonio
The Alamodome
by keeweechic
Alamodome as viewed from the tower of the America's.
This is a 160,000sqft building which provides facilities for basketball, football, concerts and other events. It is the only domed stadium in North America with two permanent ice sheets. There are tours if events are not scheduled at the time.
Colorful Pottery
by VeronicaG about The Village Gallery
For that unique piece, stop by The Village Gallery in La Villita, where the shop offers stoneware and pottery distinctive of Texas.
I quickly found a great looking spoon rest and a cheese tray as I browsed through the rooms (picture 2). The stoneware was beautifully arranged in sets, so it was simple to select something that matched. The difficult part was making a choice--so many color combinations!
Several small rooms and second floor comprise the cozy shop, all stacked with wonderful things. I'll definitely want to stop by another time. The best part about shopping in La Villita is its historic charm!
Great Southwestern Food on the Riverwalk
by spgood301 about Zuni Grill
Zuni Grill is a very nice Southwestern restaurant on the Riverwalk. Sit outdoors and enjoy the view, or indoors too. If you enjoy the cuisine of the southwestern US like I do, Zuni Grill is a must-do while in San Antonio. They have a variety of meat and seafood dishes, all with a southwestern flair. And they make a fine margarita too.
If I ever get back to San Antonio, I'll be sure to stop by the Zuni Grill again. I had the Blue Corn Chicken Enchiladas - delicious!
Dining Alfesco
by keeweechic about La Margarita Mexican & Oyster RestaurantLa Ma
La Margarita Mexican & Oyster Restaurant is right in Market Square. You can sit inside in the cool (and probably wait longer for a table) or sit outside under umbrellas with large ceiling fans circulating above. The pigeons are real friendly too but not a bother. I did eat at this one. The taco salad was great, set in a taco basket with delicious marinated grilled chicken strips. Dressing was served separately (thankfully).
The Wednesday special was very good also. Roast pork with rice guacomole, pickled carrots, spanish onions, chapalti sauce which also came with a bean soup.
San Antonio Botanical Garden
by sswagner
North of downtown is one of the country's best botanic gardens. This is not to be confused with the Japanese Tea Garden, which is in a different area.
The gardens cover a large area and have many different themes. There are some greenhouses for the desert and tropical plants. You will also find a smaller Japanese garden, a biblical garden, and an areas which represent certain regions of Texas. If the weather is nice outside, this might be a good choice for an escape. The gardens can be found north from downtown off of I-35. Be sure to check out the website for directions.
