Midland airport to Fort Davis

by skylynx

This San Antonio forum seems to be one of the few active for West Texas, so am posting here. We plan to fly from Orlando, FL to Midland MAF, and take I-20 to hiway 17, down thru the glass mountains to Fort Davis area. Is it remote desert all the way down 20 and 17? Any gas stations or stores along that route, except in towns?

It can be pretty desolate, but not cactus sand desert. There are plenty of little blink towns (blink and you passed them) with good gas stations and places to eat. You won't need to strap spare fuel tanks to your vehicle :-)

Travel Tips for San Antonio

San Antonio is in the south of Texas. It is almost as useful there to speak Spanish as it is English. I mention this for some of my VT friends in Spain and Argentina who speak both languages so well.

THE SPIRIT OF SACRIFICE (The Alamo Cenotaph)

by Yaqui

This is a very beautifully scupltor and is located in Alamo Plaza on South Alamo and East Crockett Streets, designed by Carlton Adams before Coppini was chosen as sculptor the Cenotaph reads:
"Erected in Memory of the Heroes who sacrificed their lives at the Alamo, March 6, 1836 in the defense of Texas, "They chose never to surrender nor retreat, these brave hearts with flag still proudly waving perished in the flames of immortality that their high sacrifice might lead to the founding on this Texas." There was debate on why a Cenotaph was choosen as memorial since it is not totally clear why there were no survivors and it has been believed that if any of the men did survive they were put to death right after battle (although is has been documented that some family members did survive the battle) or believe their bodies where piled high and burned and buried tragically. (The Greek words kenos, (empty) and taphos, (tomb) - cenotaphs are tombs or monuments erected to honor a person or persons whose remains are elsewhere or their whereabouts unknown.)

So interesting to learn so much from readings and my travels of what I find and photograph!

Love the salads here

by amadeeville about Zuni Grill

Zuni - A Pueblo people located in western New Mexico.

The waitress was very friendly and remembered my face from the day before so it made me feel at home as if I had been there many times before. I ate at Zuni's two times. Had their spinach tuna salad and their spinach salmon salad and both were good. However, the tuna on the salad was almost rare (medium rare) but was chewy and delicious. If you are looking for healthy food it's at Zuni's.

Best Fast Food

by msbrandysue about Taco Bueno

Yes, America is all about fast food. It's cheap, fast, and easy! While in San Antonio I always make sure to stop at Taco Bueno!! It is great tex-mex food with a lower price. Although loaded in calories I always save one meal to splurge and this is definitely the one!

*No alcohol is available like some places around here though. My favorite meal is the Mucho Nachos (without the chili sauce or refried beans) with a soft beef taco. It is enough for two people, unless you're really hungry!! They put plenty of queso and tomatos on top which I always enjoy. However, because of all the the toppings some of the chips lose their crunch. I love it!! My mom hates nachos like that so be advised!

The tacos both hard and crispy are fantastic. I've heard the tortilla soup is great, although it's usually only available in the colder months. The mexi-dip is also great. You get beans, guacamole, and a cheese puff to dip your chips in.

A Day for the Kids

by dtimoske

There's certainly a lot to do here and the rides are pretty good. The water park is much improved, so make sure you bring bathing suits. Lockers are available for a small fee in the water park as well. The shows are not the greatest but give you a chance to rest a little. At the end of the night is a laser show on the rim of the Quarry. It's worth a view. The park has a little bit of everything: plenty of rides for the little kids, roller coasters for the older kids and the kid in all of us, rides that will cool you off, plenty of food, and plenty of games.

You certainly can see everything in one day if you get there early. If the mom has the kids for the day, the dad can enjoy a round of spectacular gold at the neighboring La Cantera Golf Course. If the dad has the kids, mom can enjoy great shopping at the new and elegant La Cantera shopping center which is also adjacent to the park.
