Riverwalk Suites

I highly recommend this hotel. It has a great mix of amenities for all travellers including business, leisure, family, etc. This is part of the Hilton chain, so a lot of the standards apply including HHonors. All rooms are suites so a lot of spaaaacccce. Full breakfast every morning (free) and evening reception on weeknights (also free) make this a great value. Also free are high-speed internet and business center.

Unique Quality: This is a historic building as a lot of San Antonio hotels are. It was built in the 1920's as the San Antonio Drug Company and converted into a hotel in 1995. Hotel lobby has floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the San Antonio Riverwalk. Rooftop swimming pool also has great views of downtown.

Nice Choice Right On Riverwalk

The hotel is on the Western edge of the Riverwalk area. This section of the Riverwalk is quite calm and doesn't see much foot-traffic. But it's only a few minute walk to the bustling main section. And it's only 2 blocks away from Hard Rock Cafe.
The morning breakfast buffet is nice but can be very crowded, especially on weekends.
All rooms are 2-bedroom suites with a nice kitchen with fridge, stove, microwave and dishwasher so you can do some of your own cooking, re-heating, etc.

Unique Quality: This hotel was created by gutting and retro-fitting the old San Antonio Drug. Co. building. Everything on the exterior was preserved, including the loading dock which is now the entrance. But the whole interior is modern and similar to any other new hotel. One nice feature is the morning breakfast buffet, which has seating with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Riverwalk. The only parking is valet, but you can self-park across the street for less money (they don't tell you that, of course).

More about Homewood Suites Riverwalk Downtown San Antonio

Good value and location but watch the taxes and valet

by A TripAdvisor Member

This was our second stay the the Homewood Suites Riverwalk. For $116 for a suite right on the Riverwalk, you can't beat it. My Dad was visiting from Canada and he loved it! He didn't have to get in a car once he arrived. You're a 10 minute stroll to the Alamo, the RiverCenter Mall, the Convention Center and dozens of restaurants and shops. You can't beat the full hot breakfast and happy hour. I will say that breakfast and happy hour were very busy somedays due to spring break- but not rowdy; mostly school groups and senior bus tours. The taxes are high: county, city, state were about $19/nt. and the valet was expensive at $16. (I figure the valet was a wash with the free breakfast). The suites are comfortable with a separate kitchenette, living area and TV. (The 2nd TV is great if you have kids). We did have a noisy bachelor party in the suite next to us the last night, but they didn't charge us for that night. I would still definitely recommend it for location and value; but I may consider another Suites hotel next time like Drury Inn if they offer the free breakfast and have free parking as well.

Understandable drop in ratings over 2003

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed over Christmas week 2003. I had booked the room in May 2003 and the hotel was rated 2nd on tripadvisor.com; it had dropped to 11th place by December 2003. The floor plan--door between sitting area and bedroom--and breakfast are the major perks. Most disappointing was the quality of the staff. Most of the time we received no eye contact, let alone a smile or greeting. The room was not cleaned on the last two days of our 8-day stay and housekeeping leaves at 5 p.m., done or not.
The room was shabby with a broken mirror, stained tub, broken A/C. The pool and exercise room are matchbox sized. Our only bonus was also evidence of the hotel's problems--they lost 5 days of our valet parking ticket--saving us $100. Don't be fooled by the satisfaction guarantees--the staff are not interested in making this a white-glove stay or earning your repeat business.

A relaxing and fun experience

We stayed at this nice hotel early in December, before all of the tourists descended on the River Walk, and it was just wonderful! The hotel is within walking distance of all attractions on the River Walk as well as the Alamo and all of the great shops and restaurants. We had a room with a river view which was a lot of fun when the caroling boats came by. The light dinner and drinks were a nice alternative some evenings after having eaten a big lunch. I would definitely stay there again.

Stayed here on business in January 2004. I will echo the positive reviews that this hotel has gotten from most of the reviewers. Great service, great location, friendly staff, fine breakfast. Didn't partake in the afternoon happy hour (M-F only, by the way). Yes, the parking is valet only $16/day. But that was cheaper than the hotel next door. I don't consider that out of the ordinary for a downtown hotel. Our bellhop was great! He went above and beyond the call of duty by filling up our cooler when we checked out. He even greated my wife by name two days after we checked in. Even on the 10th floor, we could hear street noise. But it wasn't enough to keep us awake. We'll stay here again if in the area.

Didn't know what to expect

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed here on the 30th Jan 04 on our tour around southern texas. We had not stayed in any homewood suites before and didn't really know what to expect. Can't say anything adverse about the hotel, the room was very well equiped and ideal for a family looking to self cater but it was not that confortable and the smells from others cooking did drift into the coridors. I wouldn't recommend this type of accomodation for travellers who want normal hotel type rooms. Great location and loved San Antonio especially river walk.

Convenient, efficient, low key

by TripAdvisor Member enaj47

Convenient location on the River Walk, efficient service, suite dark but well appointed. Wonderful breakfast room overlooking the river. We used the rooftop pool and hot tub on a beautiful sunny afternoon in January - heavenly! As noted, the pool and hot tub are small, but we had it to ourselves with only a couple of sunbathers on the roof.

Lovely Christmas Hotel in San Antonio

by A TripAdvisor Member

We stayed at the Homewood Suites Hilton in San Antonio for a week at Christmas time. The lobby was lovely overlooking the Riverwalk and its lights. The staff was friendly and helpful. Every morning they served platters of beautiful fruit as well as a full breakfast buffet. It was a perfect location with a nice suite. We also enjoyed the pool and hot tub on the roof which had spectacular views of the Christmas lights and the city.

Worked for 4 adults and a 2 year old!

by TripAdvisor Member bartonsark

We've just got back from our 3rd weekend trip to San Antonio, staying this time for one night in the Homewood Suites. I booked a double double online for $135 and everything was fine. The room was pretty big with the 2 beds in one, and a living area, kitchen and TV behind a bed on the other. The sofa in the living area pulled out into another double so our party of 4 adults and a toddler were more than adequately provided for. We were next to the lifts in the 6th floor but heard nothing. There was no double glazing on the room windows but the bedroom was at the far end so we heard no street noise either. I saw on Trip Advisor that people complained about the valet parking but the price is for the night, not for the day. So we turned up on the Saturday morning, valet parked, deposited our bags with the concierge, spent the day in SA, checked in about 5pm. On Sunday we checked out, left the bags with concierge and picked up our car late afternoon. For $16, thats not bad!! The free breakfast is buffet style and was plentiful - all 5 of us ate well. You can access the riverwalk from the hotel (at the quieter end) which means it is centrally located and easily accessible to all the sights like the Alamo, Riverwalk, La Villita and Hemisfair park. Really enjoyed our stay - will use this hotel again everytime we visit SA.
