More about Hotel Contessa
Marriage Island
by Yaqui
One of those little details that the Riverboat guides like to point out is this lovely little jut of land that sticks out into the Riverwalk with some pretty impressive trees that outline this little oasis. It is called the Marriage Island and it is said that whoever is married here will have a long and happy life together.
It's located behind the Hotel Contessa

Great cocktail bar
by mintonm about Drink Cocktail Bar
Downtown San Antonio only has one genuine cocktail bar and it's called Drink - their cocktail list is huge. Drink is very relaxed with sofas everywhere and friendly service. The cocktails average $6-10 depending on the drink, and there's also draft beer and wine. There are 4 large TVs so it's great for sporting events too.
I particularly like this location since it's away from the craziness of the Riverwalk, just opposite the Hotel Contessa. There's a relaxed crowd of locals and it's popular with the service industry too. Try their House Margarita if you get the chance (Cointreau, Grand Marnier and real lime juice - no triple sec!) since it's the best in the area. Casual
Hotel is nice /Service not so nice

Stayed at Hotel Contessa over Easter Weekend. First Impression was very nice. Beautiful hotel, rooms are decorated lovely and are very spacious. The bed was comfortable. The service from the staff was below average. Housekeeping did not get to our rooms until after 5:00P.M. When asked why they were so late we were told that we requested a late room cleaning. Which we did not. The front desk and the concierge were not helpful but the bell staff was extremely helpful. If it weren't for the bell staff we may still be standing in the drive trying to get directions. The hotel restaurant had a 1 hour wait and we were told room service would have a better selection and would be quicker but we soon learned room service had a 1 1/2 hour wait so we visited the local McDonald's. For such a nice hotel I was very disappointed in the service we received. I did leave a comment card and the manager did contact me hoping to correct these issues from happening in the future. So if your in the mood to take a chance stay at Hotel Contessa otherwise, stay at a chain where you know the service is consistant.
Had a great time at the Contessa

We also stayed at the Hotel Contessa over the Easter weekend and had no problem with the service. As for the wait at the restaurant - if it was for the Easter Sunday brunch, we had made reservations ahead of time (as we would for any nice place on Easter Sunday) and had no problems. There was never a wait for any of the other days. We found Housekeeping to be very helpful - we got extra blankets and towels as soon as we called down for them. They were also very accomodating when we weren't quite ready for our room to be made up, they'd just come back in the 5 mins. we asked them to. All in all, our whole stay at the Contessa was wonderful, not only was the staff friendly and helpful but all the guests were as well.
Perfect hotel on the Riverwalk
by TripAdvisor Member sjb95u
I had booked the Hotel Contessa for 2 nights after 1 night at the Valencia for my husband's 30th birthday surprise trip. Just got in from San Antonio, and the Hotel Contessa exceeded my expectations. From reviews, was concerned about noise from the lobby and had requested a quiet room when calling for reservation. Showed up early for reservation, but was allowed into a room 2 hours before official "check-in" time. Our room was a river view king, on the 3rd floor so view of the riverwalk was excellent. Also, this room is in a corner and doesn't face the atrium, so our room was exceedingly quiet! We used the parking garage across the street as recommended by previous travelers. Found that this was the best spot on the riverwalk as walking distance to all the restaurants, etc, was easily within 5 minutes but this area was SO quiet!!! Service and cleanliness, punctuality were all above and beyond! Although we enjoyed the Valencia, would highly recommend staying here and this is where we will be from now on if/when we visit San Antonio again in the future. If you are trying to decide, remember, we stayed at both during the same trip and we have agreed that the Contessa wins, "Hands down!" The SPACE within the suite was great, the bathroom was gorgeous and the decorative touches seemed much more like a luxury hotel than your standard room. The solid wooden bathroom doors and granite countertop with bronze fixture was very classy. We enjoyed complimentary coffee (which the Valencia did NOT offer), and watched the riverboat tours and people saunter down the riverwalk from our window.
First class hotel with great rooms.....
by TripAdvisor Member dmg38
We stayed at the Contessa Hotel from May 24-29 with our two children (6,7). It was
wonderful. We arrived Wednesday around 2pm and did't expect to check-in but our
room was ready. I had booked our reservation back in November thru their website and
got a great deal on a river view suite room. We were in room 902 which was at the
end of the hall/corner. The room was spotless clean and decorated very nicely.
Our kids ended up using the pullout sofa in the living area so we had our own room.
The bathroom was very nice with the granite counter tops, etc. The decor is different
than what we're used to on the east coast but we loved the mission/tex/mex style.
I guess that's what you would call it! I also requested a refrigerator for our room.
It arrived later that day at no extra charge and we kept cold dri nks in it for the kids.
We did not use the service bar and our in room safe was not working but not a big deal.
As for the rest of the hotel, the pool was nice and on the roof. The kids thought this
was great. At night, the top of the hotel was illuminated with different colored blinking
lights that you could see from the pool. There were plenty of towels, etc too.
We at breakfast at the hotel two mornings and did the buffet. It was a first class buffet
with plenty of variety and not over priced. The kids ate for half price. Both mornings
we sat outside along the riverwalk.
For parking we parked across the street as recommended in other reviews. We rented
a car b/c we went to Sea World, Nature Bridge Caverns, Mission trail, and even
went to a minor league baseball game. Thursdays are dollar night at the SA missions
minor league games (for hotdogs,pizza,beer,soda).
Parking across the street did save us money but if you plan on just staying down town
you don't need a car. We also took the trolley car to the Market square. That was neat.
As for the river walk we ate at Cafe Ole for lunch, Republic of Texas for breakfast,
Hard Rock cafe and Rain Forest cafe for dinner. We also at at Schilo's deli. I was
very dissappointed in their food. Not a true deli sandwich!! WE wanted to avoid the
chain restaurants that we have at home but with our kids it was kind of hard.
If you plan on eating at the Rain Forest make a reservation. Over all the food
was great in SA.
Thank you Hotel Contessa for a great trip and we loved your city!!!
Very pleasant stay

We stayed at the Contessa for two nights in March 2006, and had a great time. The Contessa is a contemporary hotel located on the Riverwalk. (Be sure to walk to the left when you leave the hotel on the Riverwalk. It leads to the active part of the walk. To the right is the Westin and then there's not much.) It is not right next to the bar scene. We found this a plus, as it is a very short walk to the bars, but the noise of the bars won't keep you up. I found the architecture and design of the public areas to be serene and relaxing.
We had breakfast at the Hilton one morning and the Contessa the next. The price of the breakfast at the Contessa was half of the Hilton's, and 100% better.
Internet service is free, which we also enjoyed. The staff was very friendly and informative.
The pool is on top of the building in a contemporary setting with views of the city. Our only complaint was there was not poolside bar service. In order to have drinks, you must go to the bottom floor, where the bar is located, purchase your drinks, and then bring them back up.
We went with our two children (ages 7 and 4), and the size of the suite was perfect for our family. The room was nicely decorated, but I will say that the suite portion was a bit dark. The beds were extremely comfortable. Parking was a bit expensive, $24 day. I don't know how that compares to other hotels.
All in all, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Contessa and would stay there again.
