San Antonios best

We spent 4 day's at the Menger, and couldn't have been happier. The lobby is like a museum, and the rooms were plenty big for my family of 5. The valet is expensive, but there are other choices. Also, the air conditioner was the best I had ever experienced. Very cold, which was great during the 102 degree days of August! Highly reccomended. We will stay nowhere else when in San Antonio.

Unique Quality: The Lobby. The pool.

Historic Hotel Steps from The Alamo

The Menger Hotel, a victorian styled hotel, was constructed in 1859 only 100 yards from the site of the Alamo. The Menger has housed interesting personalities such as Theodore Roosevelt, Babe Ruth, Mae West, Robert E. Lee, and Ulysses S. Grant just to name a few.

Originally a 2 story hotel has been enlarged from its first incarnation to incorporate 316 beautifully furnished guest rooms and suites. Once you enter the hotel lobby I'm sure you will experience the history and charm of this national landmark, as well as the comfort of a high-class hotel.

Beware for those who are afraid of GHOSTS. There have been ghost sightings at this hotel. Some stories are:

Chambermaid, Sallie White, murdered by her husband has been seen walking in the hotel corridors, especially at night. She is seen in an old, long gray skirt with a bandana around her forehead and is generally carrying towels, which she never delivers.

Captain Richard King, founder of the King Ranch, appears now and then entering his room, the King Suite. The unusual thing is that he does not use the suite door, but goes directly through the wall. There was a door in the location where Captain King entered his suite many years ago.

A figure of a man clad in a buckskin jacket and gray trousers is seen in one hotel suite. To further cloud the issue, this apparition is speaking to someone or something else in the room that cannot be seen. The ghost asks the question "Are you gonna stay or are you gonna go?" three times.

A lady sits knitting in the original lobby of the Menger Hotel. She wears a dated blue dress and a beret with a tassel.

The Alamo is a neighbor

Each time we've visited the Alamo, we pass the Menger Hotel, which is said to be the oldest hotel in continuous operation west of the Mississippi. It began its career of hosting the public as a modest boarding house. A German beer-maker, William Menger, constructed it in 1855.

I wish I could say we took the time to peek inside this stately building, but we never had the time to deviate from our plans. Suffice it to say, the hotel has hosted celebrities such as Robert E. Lee, William Sherman, Jenny Lind, Buffalo Bill and Oscar Wilde. According to all reports, a vast renovation has returned it to the Victorian showpiece it was originally. However, its still modern enough to have a swimming pool.

The Menger is convenient to most sites you'll want to see and offers a great shopping opportunity: Rivercenter Mall. It's also across the street from an entrance to the Riverwalk.

The Menger Hotel

Step into the exquisite three-story Victorian lobby of the Menger Hotel, and you’ll be transported to a time of frontier history and legend. Built in 1859 on the site of Texas’ first brewery, the Menger ushered in a new era of sophistication to the Texas frontier, and more than 150 years of refinements have created a masterpiece of traditional elegance and modern comforts.

Gracious style - and a ghost

I just love hotels with a past - and the Historic Menger surely is one of those. The list of guests who have stayed there over the last almost 150 years is a veritable Who's Who of the 19th and 20th centuries. Some say Teddy Roosevelt occasionally can be seen in a corner of the bar, along with no less than 31 others ghosts who appear from time to time! None of them chose to show themselves to us and we slept well and comfortably in our small but pretty room overlooking the central courtyard garden. The staff were very friendly and courteous, breakfast was excellent, the location ideal ... all the things I look for in a hotel.

Unique Quality: The hotel is renowned for its old world charm, antique furnishings and displays in the beautiful Victorian lobby, and clubby bar - where Teddy Roosevelt raised his Rough Riders.
There are some great historical photos lining in the passage way near the bar. The location is brilliant for downtown shopping, the Riverwalk, the Convention Centre, etc - and to cap it all, the most important and historic building in all San Antonio -The Alamo - is right outside. What better view could there be than that?

Menger Hotel

Founded in 1859 and catered to famous people like Sam Houston, Teddy Roosevelt, and Mae West. The beautiful Colonial Room Garden Restaurant serves a wonderful breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Unique Quality: The rooms are rather small. The decor is gorgeous and the food is fabulous. The breakfast buffet is less expensive here than at the Marriott.

Loved it !!!!!

The Historic Menger is just that, an old hotel with a story to tell. When you enter you are taken back to the past. the front desk personnel were very helpful, housekeeping was also very helpful, we needed extra pillows and were given them when requested. The rooms are small, but it is an old hotel, the bathroom is also small but quaint. You can't beat the location if you are there to visit the riverwalk it is a block away, we were there to visit our son at Lackland for graduation and the drive was very convenient.. I found a great rate on SaSave.com for 89.00 a night thur-sun. Would definitely stay there again if we ever return

Unique Quality: There is an outdoor heated pool surrounded by trees and flowers also a hot tub, unfortunately we weren't able to use either due to time constrictions, the courtyard is full of trees and flowers and plants was very relaxing. The breakfast buffet was excellent, they don't offer any free breakfast foods but they do have free coffee. They have a valet service which is 17.00 a day a steal considering there is no real parking close by except the Rivercenter ramp, but the valet was so easy , no having to find a spot or walk a distance, you called for your car and it was there when you were ready to leave.

Best hotels near the ALAMO?

by skunker

Hi folks,
I am wanting to know what are the best hotels near the Alamo? I've heard of the Menger hotel, but what else is available? Are they walking distance to the Alamo?

Thanks for any suggestions.

There are two reasonable hotels close by..

Travelodge Alamo Hotel
405 Broadway
800-695-8284

and

Comfort Inn Alamo Riverwalk
120 Camaron Street
800-695-8284

Consider the King William Historic District (Neighborhood)

by Out.in.MN

As much fun as it is to stay in the wild heart of San Antonio - right on the Riverwalk - we had a better experience staying nearby.

If you enjoy urban hiking - consider staying in the 'King William' neighborhood. (Walk to the Alamo or take a trolley).

This neighborhood of restored manor homes is an oasis of trees and quiet streets. Some of the estates have been restored and can be toured.

The Alamo is right downtown - almost any of the downtown hotels are within easy walking distance. Most of the Riverwalk hotels would work fine. The Menger is very close (right next door), and I think there's one right across the street (Emily Morgan?), but really anything you find in the main Riverwalk area or that part of downtown should be OK, as far as being within walking distance. Without knowing your price range, it's difficult to say what the "best" hotels are - I stayed in the Westin Riverwalk once and it was quite nice. The La Mansion del Rio looked extremely nice (though even more expensive), but I've never stayed there.

I go to San Antonio once a year for a conference. Last year I stayed at the Menger because it was cheaper than the Marriott RiverCenter. (Not that the Menger is inexpensive - but it was a lot less than the Marriott, which is where the conference is held.) It is very close to the Alamo. I plan on staying at the Menger again.
In addition to the Emily Morgan, you might also consider the Crockett.
