The Alamo Statue
by ATXtraveler
“In Memory of the Heroes who sacrificed their lives at the Alamo. March 6, 1836, in the defense of Texas. They chose never to surrender nor retreat, these brave hearts with flag still proudly waving, perished in the flames of immortality that their high sacrifice might lead to the founding of This Texas.”
True Patriots in every sense of the word, the people who gave their lives at the Alamo are beautifully remembered outside the Alamo grounds with a wonderful statue presented 100 years after the battle that founded Texas occurred. The statue contains the names of each person who died in the battle, 189 in all. Some of the well known figures are also immortalized in full body portraits surrounding the statue. I definitely recommend spending 10-15 minutes reading every name, and you will get an appreciation of just how important these 189 men were to the state.
Fredericksburg
by TheWanderingCamel
Just 50 miles from San Antonio , the small town of Fredericksburg was once another world. Unlike San Antonio's Spanish beginnings, Fredericksburg was founded by Germans in 1846. Mostly liberal, educated Prussians, the settlers were granted land for a farm and a small holding in the town.
In the beginning a single church, known as the Vereins's Kirche - the Society Church - served all the different groups of the community - even the Catholics- each taking their turn for their services. As the settlement prospered, the different denomination built their own church and the Verein's Kirche eventually fell into disrepair and was demolished in the 1930s. Now rebuilt, the church is both a distinctive landmark in the town and an interesting little museum.

The Pioneer Museum, just a couple of blocks further down Main Street, tells of the lives of those pioneers. Housed in a lovingly restored collection of original buildings from the town and the surrounding district - farmhouses, a Sunday house, a schoolhouse, a barn, a store, etc, all set in several acres of gardens planted with native and historically accurate plants and trees- it is a delight, full of domestic detail and charm. A short explanation of the museum is given as you enter, after that you are free to wander as you like.

A Boat Trip Along River Walk
by KimberlyAnn
Another way to enjoy a view of the River Walk area is to take the Yanaguana Cruise. The ticket office is located at River Center Mall, 315 E. Commerce. This 1-hour tour will take you along the San Antonio River. Your guide will point out the sites along the Paseo del Rio/Riverwalk area and explain the river’s history. The River Walk area has a history that dates back to 1921. This area of San Anatonio flooded repeatedly whenever there were heavy rains, with the worst flood occurring in 1921. Destruction of property and loss of life had some people talking seriously of paving over the river and constructing an underground storm drain. Some people however wanted to save the river. One such person was Robert Hugman who is called the “Father of the River Walk” because it was he who created the master plan that makes the River Walk the place of natural beauty that you see today. Tours generally leave every half hour from 10:00 A.M. to 8:00 P.M. daily. Some restaurants in the area also offer dinner cruises through Yanaquana. For more information about these tours visit their web site.
Good Mexican Food Near Parks & Museums
by TexasDave about Picante Grill
In a city with oodles of Mexican restaurants the food here is outstanding. Their salsa is homemade and excellent and there are several plates offered that you won't see in most Mexican places. It has been voted 'Best of San Antonio' in different categories (Enchiladas, Mole, Salsa, etc) several years in a row. Chicken Mole.

Zoo is located in Brackenridge Park, just north of the downtown CBD.
A great way to pass the morning, or the whole day. The childrens zoo area has been redone and is geared towards families with children under 5 yrs old. One of the best chlidrens areas I've ever seen at a zoo.
