Travel Tips for San Antonio

Missions Hike and Bike Trail

by msbrandysue

The missions are quite the distance between each other (at least for me) but there is a hiking and biking trail that connects them all. I suggest the entire trail only for experienced distance bikers but it could be fun for a few closer together.

From Mission Concepción to Mission Espada, eight (8) miles of dedicated paved pathways are reserved for the hiker and biker. An easy walk or ride, it is suitable for even young members of the family. [The land is very flat in Texas :)] The trail is not a loop, so the round-trip path is actually 16 miles. However, walkers and bikers can start at any of the four missions and travel to the next mission, making the round trip only six (6) miles. Water is available at each mission. Food is available near Missions Concepción and San José, but not near Missions San Juan and Espada, so plan accordingly (taken from website).

Just be careful of the HEAT in the summer!!

In case of emergencies there are call boxes along the trail.

*Check the website for construction and detour information that may be taking place periodically thoughtout the year. You have to provide your own equipment, and there is no renting at any of the ranger stations on the mission trail.

This place rocks if you like to dance

by amadeeville about Polly Esther's

Polly Esther's is a great place to hang out if you like to dance. There are three dance floors each representing a different era, the 70's, 80's, and club expo today's current hits. There is only one cover charge for all three.

Although the club is nice if your looking to talk with locals about the culture here go to a club in the city because you are going to find mostly tourist at Polly Esthers not citizens of Texas. No coat and Tie and I'm not sure about sneakers.

Let Them Eat Cheesecake

by starrlot about The Cheesecake Factory

An attractive, as usual, restaurant located in the North Star Mall. Their lunch portions are enormous. The atmosphere is relaxing, however they do need to get rid of their aging wicker chairs, they are not comfortable. Nothing is relaxing about sitting in a chair with wicker straws poking you.

The service is lacking for the reputation that The Cheesecake Factory is known for, so that was a disappointment. Our waitress had to be told to refresh the bread and drinks constantly, we sat way too many times with no bread to eat while waiting for our food, and nothing to drink several times.

I will definitely return on our next visit, however I will expect better service if I am to return a third time. Chicken fettucini dish and tiramisu cheesecake.

Day Trip in the Hill Country

by elmendorfs

HEY! THANKS to EVERYONE for the tips! I had a great time. Sunday I drove northwest to Governmet Canyon http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/government_canyon/ and hiked the Joe Johnson trail and Lookout trail. Then north to Boerne http://www.visitboerne.org/ and across 46 East to New Braunfels. At New Braunfels http://www.newbraunfels.com/ , I jumped in the spring/river to cool off a bit, then headed back to the airport. For dinner Sunday night we went to Mamacita's, which was very nice. http://www.mamacitas.com/sanantonio.html The rest of the week I spent downtown. Stayed at the Omni on the river walk and did lots of walking. :) Hot and humid, but hey, it's June in Texas! Plenty of sunshine, but enough clouds to keep it from 'blazing' and quite breezy which also helped combat the heat. The riverwalk was great as I remembered, and the evenings were especially nice. Look forward to coming back and having more time for fun!

San Antonio Missions - Beyond the Alamo

by sue&gene

Don't stop with just a visit to the Alamo. The San Antonio Missions National Historical Park includes 4 additional missions and two of the best surviving examples of Spanish colonial irrigation systems in the US ... the Espada dam and aqueduct. Be sure and get a map before heading out. Begin at the Alamo and go south ... you will step back in time to a fascinating peroid of Texas history. One of the missions (I think it is San Jose) also has all the outlying buildings preserved. It takes a little time but is well worth a complete day spent to investigate and enjoy these sights.
