Travel Tips for San Antonio

Alamodome

by kd_baby

This is Texas-size stadium hosts the Alamo Bowl, and the Monster Jam. This stadium is so big two college football games could occur simultaneously on 2 differerent fields--all under the same roof. Now that's Texas-size! As usual, bring money.

Howling on the Riverwalk

by flyntfaery about Howl At the MOON

Great bar atmosphere with dualing pianos and a young hip crowd. Performers are not Billy Joel wannabees but creative young musicians who can play just about anything. ( Yes they take requests, please dont request Piano Man!) They have lots of beer on tap and others in bottles, including a cigar selection and cool souvineir shop Casual/ dressy casual. Jeans are always appropo in San Antonio, just make sure they are clean!

Lots of ambiance at the Spaghetti Warehouse

by 807Wheaton about Spaghetti Warehouse

We enjoyed our meal at the Spaghetti Warehouse in San Antonio. We were seated in the trolley car which is very cozy and pleasant. We got the 15 layer lasagna to split and we each ordered a refill salad. The lasagna was very good - better than I expected. The service was also great. The 15 layer lasagna had great flavor and thickness. The bread they serve is warm and tasty.

Junk and Gems

by starrlot

The El Mercado is a festive and cultural shopping mecca situated adjacent to downtown San Antonio. However, each year the shops become more run down and the merchandise starts becoming overpriced junk. For instance, there are mass produced tinker toys and decorative art that have nothing to do with the Mexican culture and more suited for a fair booth.

The gem to find at the El Mercado are Day of the Dead sculpted dolls. Even then you must decide which are of good quality and which are overpriced cheap tourist traps. Look for ones that include symbolism and propaganda. For a small one, expect to pay about $30 and for a large one about $50 at the most, anything else is overpriced junk that is being exploited from the artist that they paid half of what they are charging.

Don't even bother with the Farmer's Market if you are wanting authentic Mexican merchandise, they are more like a flea market complete with Chinese retaurants. Definitely not the atmosphere the original Mercado is struggling to maintain.

Buckhorn Saloon: Part Museum, Part Bar

by MatthewMetcalfe

The Buckhorn Museum got it's start back in 1881. The Story goes that if you bought a set of antlers in they'd give you a shot of whiskey or a beer in exchange. A lot of people took them up on that offer.

Now in a larger location, there are tons of antlers on display as well as quite a few trophy animals. They also have some of the bizarre like two headed animals and shrunken heads from South America.

What I liked the most were the chairs made from horns. What I like second best was that you could buy a beer at the saloon and carry it through the museum with you!
