San Antonio restaurants and shopping

by rnj1

My wife, 19 year old son and I will be in San Antonio the first of June. We really enjoy eating at local restaurants. Can anyone help us with some of the locally owned restaurants? We will be staying downtown but will have transportation. Alos, what are the best places to shop? Any outlet malls? Also, what are the must things to see and experience - the Alamo, etc. Thanks for your help!

All that you are looking for is on the Riverwalk, shopping and restaurants.

The Alamo is a must, the Riverwalk at night also, and The Grotto.

Here are a few of my favorites: Mi Tierra (Market Square area), Boudro's (Riverwalk), Rosario's (King William area). These are all within 5 minutes of downtown. Shopping=North Star Mall, Shops at La Cantera, outlet malls are in San Marcos (45 minutes north of San Antonio). Experiences include ALL of the missions along the mission trail, River Barge tour (40 minutes), Broadway musical at the Majestic Theater.

Travel Tips for San Antonio

Be sure to keep almost a whole...

Be sure to keep almost a whole day for Sea World because that is how long it takes. Everything from the Shamu killer whale Show to the Seal and Walrus and so many others to the various exhibits that cover the park.. There are also two awesome roller coasters...and coming from me, you know they have to be good..

NIMITZ MUSEUM COMPLEX

by mtncorg

Chester Nimitz grew up here in Fredericksburg - about 70 miles north of San Antonio. He was so impressed by the bearing of a couple of Army officers that he met from nearby Fort Sam Houston in San Antonio that he applied for acceptance in to West Point. Since that year's appointments had already been made, he accepted an appointment to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland instead. Thus began his long naval career that would take him from the family hostelry - the Nimitz Hotel within which the Museum is today housed - to the top of the American naval effort against Japan in World War II> The museum recounts the Nimitz family history here in Fredericksburg, as well as recounting the famous admiral's career in detailed exhibits. Cost of entry is $7 and includes entry to the George H. W. Bush Gallery of the Pacific War, the Memorial Courtyard and the Pacific Combat Zone.

Getting There and Around

by keeweechic

By Air : The international airport at San Antonio is around 20 kms from the downtown River Walk area and is directly linked via expressway. The airport has connections to over 50 cities. There is a shuttle service which is available to most hotels in the downtown area.
By Rail : Amtrak runs a service to and from Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Chicago and Greyhound and Kerrville Bus Company have a regional and interstate service. There is a new Amtrak's station which is found in St. Paul Square, between the Sunset Station complex and the Alamodome.

Downtown streetcar service : Streetcars come by each stop about every 10 minutes. You get from Alamo Plaza to just about anywhere in downtown San Antonio within 10 minutes. Each streetcar line has it's own unique symbol and colour. Be aware that this is not the colour of the trolley but the colour shone in the front of the trolley (red, blue, purple and yellow). It only used to cost around .50c per ride.

Steak House

by Maria250 about Ruth's Chris Steak House

Nice place also guests don't need to be like over dressed.
Great food/tender steaks, fantastic cooked/spiced vegetable, great service.
I though thought our seats were a little uncomfortable
like sitting on a couch and having the table way up high.

The Alamo

by McPee

Well worth a visit. No photograghs are allowed inside. Just check the opening times beofre you go. Most of the hotels have details about how to get there and the times days by day.

It is very easy to find Downtown.
