Driving from Houston to San Antonio
by ChrisSheena
My wife and I plan to visit San Antonio in late October. We will be flying into Houston and thinking about renting a car to drive to San Antonio. I expect it will take 3-4 hours. Alternatively, we could fly of course. Recommendations either way would be appreciated. Thanks.

There is not too much to see for the drive, but it might be cheaper to rent a car rather than fly and pay for parking at the airport. Plus you would want a car to get around San Antonio. San Antonio is a lovely city, I hope you have a nice visit!

The 3 hour drive is fairly uneventful, a few ranches and loads of farmland. If you are tight on time, my pick would be a 45 minute flight (you can go from Hobby Airport via Southwest Airlines). From San Antonio International, you can catch an $18.00 cab downtown to the Riverwalk area. The downtown is very pedestrian friendly, with a trolley system to reach the Market Square shopping area and King William historic district.
Cheers!

It depends on if you want a car in San Antonio, with airport check in and claiming luggage it takes about the same time to drive. If you drive it is only 3 hours and straight out I-10 going West, it's an easy drive once you get out of Houston and past all the construction on I-10 :-) You really don't need a car in San Antonio unless you are going to Sea World or want to visit some places outside the city. The Riverwalk is where it's all at.

The mission trail (2)
by GUYON
The Mission was settled in 1720. It is certainly the largest and the moste beautiful.
It was frequently attacked during the 18e century to be looted.

The war in the Pacific
by TheWanderingCamel
Fredericksburg, in the heart of the Texas Hill Country, is hardly the place you would expect to find a museum dedicated to a story of American Navy in perhaps its finest hour - the huge theatre of the Pacific in WWII.
The town was the birthplace of Fleet Admiral Chester W.Nimitz, and the museum is partially housed in a hotel that was purchased by Admiral Nimitz's grandfather in 1855, itself an important Texas landmark that could tell many tales of the historical figures who stayed there. The museum has long since outgrown the distinctive building though, and now occupies a 9 acre site, designated a State Historic Site.
The only museum in the United States that is dedicated exclusively to this story, the museum really brings the war in the Pacific to life, with excellent exhibits, incredibly realistic dioramas, film and sound.
The museum's extraordinary steamboat superstructure makes it impossible to miss as you come into town.

San Antonio is accessible by air, rail and road... It is connected to all major cities.
Like most cities in Texas, San Antonio doesn't have a well developed public transport system since everyone owns a car. However, you don't need to drive around downtown since everything is pretty much walkable and there is a Downtown Trolley-bus and you can even arrange a horse carriage tour. Sea World however is a good 20-30 minute drive and you will need a car or need to make arrangements with a shuttle or a cab.

River Center Plaza
by msbrandysue about Chili's
Chili's is considered by some as "fast food." It is a sit-down restaurant with a very laid back atmosphere. There is food and a full service bar. Children are usually present as well as good times. This is one of those places where you can find anything for anyone so it ends up being somewhere I go A LOT, especially with family and big groups. If you're in a rush this place usually serves your food in around 15-20 minutes. Of course, you can also get it to go as they offer their full menu in a To-Go option.
The hours are not listed on the website but I've always been able to get in before 11pm. They are open even later on weekends.
Chili's is a great place to eat but my favorite has been the one in San Antonio on the Riverwalk. On a beautiful day we enjoyed lunch while watching the river cruise boats circle around the plaza's giant Christmas tree. You're probably thinking...Christmas?? on the patio?? Yes, in San Antonio many Christmas seasons are spent in mild temperatures. I don't even think we had jackets on!
One of the funniest parts about eating on the patio was watching the pigeons. They even took over one of the tables at Hooters next door. After the patrons left they just jumped on the table and started eating anything left on the table! Very funny! For an appetizer around $2-3 we get the unending bowl of chips and hot sauce. Their chips are very good. If you want to try something new order a side of ranch and dip them in ranch dressing. Very good! And I used to hate ranch dressing...Since I tried chips with ranch I'm hooked.
For an entree I now get the Quesadilla Explosion. It is a salad with fajita chicken on top, as well as tomatos, corn, beans, etc. They also serve cheese quesadilla squares surrounding the salad. I always get the avacado ranch with it. Yummmmy!
If you don't do salads the grilled chicken sandwich is good. It comes with honey mustard, melted swiss cheese, and bacon on it. The chicken quesadillas are also very good. Chili's is quite famous for their baby back ribs, if you'd like to try those.
