City Center--River Walk, La Vallita
by VeronicaG
San Antonio can be boiling hot in the summer, so dress accordingly. Hats are the best defense again the sun--also be sure to use your sunblock.
In the winter, the wind can get gusty and weather cold, so my recommendation is to dress in layers. The mornings will be cool, the afternoon warming and getting cool again as night falls. This map will guide you on a walking tour of the various districts of San Antonio. If staying along the River Walk, La Villita is easy to find.
The beautiful Hill Country...
by darthmilmo
The beautiful Hill Country starts just to the North of San Antonio and spans several hundred miles. Just take either 281 or I-10 and venture into any of the scenic roads that go into the heart of the hill country.
Best variety of places - Riverwalk
by McPee about Various
While strolling along Riverwalk take a look at the eateries all the way along. There is a wid variety of styles to choose from.
It is worthwhile making sure you check these out before you get too hungry. There is nothing worse than stopping in at the first one ... eating , then strolling on to find the one you would have preferred.
Most Delicious Mexican Pastry I've Found Yet
by lisa_lise about El Sol
This local bakery downtown has the best Mexican pastry I've found yet. Short on quantity and selection, but BIG on quality. The sweet potato empanadas are amazing, regardless of whether you even like sweet potatoes. I prefer them here because they're not sugared up with cinnamon like the ones you find at other places--they have a clean, pure taste without being bland.
I also recommend the pig-shaped gingerbread cookies, but I think you'll enjoy whatever you choose.
La Villita Little Village
by Stellaluna
La Villita (Little Village) is a nice shopping area close to the convention center and the Hilton. It is within walking distance to the Rivercenter. This is an old town area of art galleries, craft shops, old Texas homes and souvenir shops.
Be sure to stop at Originals to design your own jewelry. Crystals, minerals and stone beads can be put together for you by professional jewelry makers. There is a $10.00 charge per piece in addition to your jewelry selection. It is well worth the time.
