The Alamo Gardens

One of the most often missed spots in San Antonio are the gardens located behind the Alamo (in the Alamo complex). Most visitors enter the Alamo from the front door, and never realize that out around back are some beautifully sculptured memorial gardens to enjoy. Throughout the area are both native and foreign flowers, trees, and shrubs, but spring time is the best time to enjoy the total garden. If you do enter through the front door, then make sure to follow the signs out the back to the gift shop, but hang a right before you get to the shop and you will be in the right place to enjoy these beautiful gardens.
Dixieland Jazz

If you like dixieland jazz, this is the place for you. The feature attraction is the Jim Cullum Jazz Band, and they are well known across the country for their playing. At one time the food was pretty good, but now it is no longer a great place to eat. Go there for the music and order a few drinks. There is a cover charge, but if you want to see a great show, it's worth it. The regular patrons of the place tend to be a bit older, but there is a mix as well.
I enjoyed my time there, but I have to admit that after about an hour, I was ready to go. Dressy Casual

Great ambience, but I'm told it can be loud at night. Latin Jazz on Saturdays, Salsa Band on Fridays. Closed Sundays. Short hours Mondays (when we were there). Wonderful, wonderful food. Their roasted salsa is to die for. Prices are reasonable, and they even had interesting flans (but kitchen was closed by dessert time). Note - they do not give you separate bills. Chipotle chicken with rice and peas. The sauce was spicy (for someone not used to it) but with a tortilla, it took the edge off. Again, the ROASTED salsa is amazing and not too hot.
The Petroleum Club

This is a members only private club. Check if your club reciprocates. If so, you will enjoy yourself here. The staff is wonderful. They have a pleasant happy hour on Fridays from 4-6pm.
To arrive there take 410W & Broadway towards the airport. However, exit Nacodoches because traffic may hinder your entrance from Broadway since it is immediately after you exit. Take N. New Braunfels by the TexMed Clinic. The club is located in the high rise next to "Energy" bldg on the 7th floor.
