Plant Places in San Antonio

by GingersRus

I'll be in San Antonio next week. I know about the San Antonio Botanical Gardens, but are there any other gardening or plant places, or good nurseries that have exotic plants?

Unfortunately, the best time to see the famous South-Central Texas wildflowers is Spring or Fall. Nevertheless, i'd recommed you take a look at the Wildflower botanical garden/nursery near Fredericksburg, Texas (just a 1 and a half hour drive from San Antonio). The Garden lies a few miles from town. You can find it heading South on Highway 290. Sorry, can't recall the name, but it's a big place that the locals could point out. In the Spring/Summer they had a wonderful array of Texan flowers.

Another wonderful place to find some wild-flowers is the San Antonio Missions National Park... an array of 4 Missions, plus the Alamo. The entrance to the 4 missions is free.

Have fun,
Fernando

Thanks, I will check that place out.
I looked for keeweechic on a member search but did not find. Are you saying keeweechic is a VT member?

Your welcome :)... BTW, the Christmas lights should be up and running in the River Walk (downtown) for another week or so. Check it out if you have the time at night.

Travel Tips for San Antonio

Guide to Tex-Mex - Migas

by ATXtraveler

Breakfast Tex-Mex is one of my personal favorites, so I would like to introduce you to one of the famous egg dishes in the repertoire. Migas is a dish of egg, corn tortillas, cheese, and salsa mixed together and served with a warm tortilla, ranchero sauce, and pico de gallo.

The egg is normally a over easy or scrambled egg, and is delicious with some fried country potatoes or hash browns.

I would suggest this dish, or Huevos Rancheros if you are eating Tex-Mex for breakfast.

Migas comes from the Spanish word for crumbs, and was originally used as a meatless meal for people to eat during Lent.

Guiness World Records Museum

I find these musuems fascinating and pretty amazing what ordinary folks will endure to break a record. Don't rush yourself. Lots to read and be amazed by:-)

The musuem is located right across from the Alamo.

Texas Land and Cattle is Awesome!

by MatthewMetcalfe about Texas Land and Cattle

Texas Land and Cattle is a chain of Texas Steakhouses. The atmosphere is Western and the restaurant is covered in Western Nostalgia. The Food is awesome and the service is great. Many of their items are cooked over mesquite wood which imparts a great flavor on the meat.

We went to the TXLC off I-10 and I would visit this place again in a heartbeat. There is also one on the Loop near the Airport and another on the Riverwalk. The Smoked Sirloin is outstanding it has a pepper crust and is sliced before serving. the Garlic Mashed Potatoes are also good. On the Lunch Sirloin you also get a side of marinated mushrooms which are fantastic. I don't think the dinner portion comes with them. If Not, I recommend ordering a side of them as well.

Authentic Mexican pastries

by Jefie about Mi Tierra Cafe y Panaderia

Located in El Mercado, Mi Tierra started out as a small coffee shop in 1941 and has now evolved into a 24 h restaurant with an overwhelmingly festive decor! The Cafe has an extensive menu, including all your Mexican and Tex-Mex favorites, but I was more impressed by the bakery - or panaderia - where you'll find an amazing selection of delicious traditional Mexican pastries. Try the pineapple biscuit with a Mexican hot chocolate (laced with cinnamon, mmmm!).
