Missions Bike Trail?

by smallpond2

I read somewhere that there is a 7-mile bike trail that connects all the missions churches. Has anyone ever done this or know anything about it? Is there a place to rent bike or would I have to bring my own?

Re: Missions Bike Trail?

I haven't done the bike trail (I drove between the missions in a car), but you can probably get some answers by contacting the visitor's center on http://www.nps.gov/saan/index.htm (near the bottom).

The brief webpage specifically for the hike & bike trail is at http://www.nps.gov/saan/planyourvisit/hikebike.htm

Check out the Charles James Bicycle Shop (oldest bike shop in San Antonio-80 years!). They rent bicycles and will even deliver them to your hotel room.

I just recently drove the trail in a car, and ran into a couple who were walking between the locations. They would not advise walking, as it is longer than it appears, but biking should be fine in terms of distance. Having just driven the trail though, I will warn you that it is not a true "trail" as much as it is a guideline on how to get from point A to point B. In other words, you will not be on a protected bike path the whole way.

Travel Tips for San Antonio

Eat Mexican food on the River...

by KnotH3ad

Eat Mexican food on the River Walk! Lunchtime during the week isn't too crowded, and the scenery is beautiful! Find a patch of carpet grass in the shade. It's amazingly springy and easy to nap on. Just make sure there are no fire ants around!

Oddities of nature

by Yaqui

During the 1921, torrential down pore right over the Olmos Basin and San Antonio River created a massive flood of 9 feet onto Houston Street. This flood killed about 50 people. It was during this flood that you can almost still see the water line among of some of the older buildings along the Riverwalk. What stands out is a tree growing out the side of the wall and one growing out of the top of another tree. It is amazing the nature will always endure.

Am I in San Fran Again?

by Jmill42

If you start to have Frisco Flashbacks, it may be due to the "trolley-style" buses. There are Brown, Yellow, Purple, Red, and Blue Routes. Route guides are available everywhere. The streetcars stop at all major attractions. Interestingly, they are all propane powered. It costs $.50 per ride.

Buffet King

by kd_baby about Buffet King

This is a large Chinese buffet on the NW side of San Antonio. This place was recommended to me, but I didn't find anything special about this place. Sure, its large selection of seafood was nice, but:

1) The sushi was subpar
2) Very few chicken and/or pork based dishes
3) The Hot & Sour soup sauce was real thick

All in all, it was just an average Chinese buffet. Although the staff was extremely friendly, they couldn't make up for the food. The large crab claws were the only redeeming value for me--at least they were good and above average in terms of buffet quality crab.

Hello John Wayne

by GUYON

Yes I know, JW has not shot his film in San Antonio.
The Alamo chapel is small and the churchs of the missions nearby are nicer. But it doen't matter.
We knew that and we were there for the History.

I am certainly just shocking a lot of Texans but I think :
- Davy Crockett was a politician anxious to be elected in a new country
- James (Jim) Bowie was a weeler-dealer wanting to keep the wealth he had accumulated.
- William B Travis had left his wife and children to be an officer and fulfil his ambition.

Certainly, these three persons though to be rescued by Fannin and they hoped to pull through. When did they really know, they were condamned ? When Travis wrote his famous letter ?.. But it seems they were able to escape and nethertheless, they remained.

I wish also to say something about Santa Anna, the awfull dictator. He decided the dead of all the defenders of Alamo and then of Goliad. But I think he was considered as a clever man by the Mexicans because he was recalled several times.

I accept to receive opposite opinions and insults.
