Shabby is the best way to describe the Bahia Mar. Service is not great. Resort is shabby. Had issues with bugs. Left a sandwich box in the car and had ants the next day. Others had the same problem.
Don't drink the water unless you enjoy muddy tasting water. You can buy bottled water at the bar but I'd recommend buying bottled water before you arrive.
Our second day there the air conditioner went out and they gave us a box fan to use in our room.
Balcony has a great view. But bring bug stray if you sit out there after dark.
If you bring more then one car you will be charged $5 a day for parking.
The Travel Lodge motel is right next door. If I have to come back to the Bahia Mar for business I'll stay there. It is newer, cleaner, nicer and a better deal for the money. There are other hotels on the island too. When it was built there weren't that many hotels on the island. Well, times have changed.

Unique Quality: It is on the beach but almost all the hotels are on the beach.
It is toward the end of the developed part of the island but there are better places to stay.

Directions: Arrive on the island and turn left. Drive for about 20 minutes and it is on your right just after the Travel Lodge. Don't stay in the Bahia Mar stay at the Travel Lodge.

A few things..

If you stop by the turtle sanctuary, talk it up with the staff- they'll tell you where you can find protected turtle nesting sites on the island. If your the bar kind of person I HIGHLY recommend Parrot Eyes- the last bar hidden behind the bayside Bahia Mar. Perfect sunset view, inexpensive drinks, live music and completley open. That place is paradise. For families or folks of all ages, don't miss the jedi on the southern side in Isa Blanca park. Be carful on the rocks but if you go out aways you WILL find some awesome wildlife in the high tide pools- octopus, sea slugs (which are awesome to play with!), urchins and I've even seen some dolphins and sea turtles swim nearby further out. The sun is intense so put on plenty of lotion, rent an umbrella and wear a hat. I've seen snow white northerners go home looking like they dove head first into a lava pit!
