We have rented at Sunchase IV for 10 years now. We used SOUTH PADRE RESORT RENTALS (1-800-944-6818) for the last 8 years. They have great service, very responsive and their office is right next to the property in the Sunchase Mall.
We have stayed in several Units, starting from a 1-bedroom on the second floor (it's good for 2 people, but NOT 4, and there is no view ;-( to several 2 bedrooms on 5th and 7th floor, and even a 3 bedroom on 11th floor.
They got a brand new pool and hottub in 2007. We were one of the first to swim in it too :-) It's one of only 2 or 3 heated pools on the island. And one of the others is indoors :-(
The 2 and 3 bedroom apartments have views to both sides, the ocean view and the bay view. Can't find that in most other buildings.
We also love that we can use the facilities of the Sunchase Beachfront complex and they have a nice pool/ small hottub, and a great deck to sunbath. It also acts as a buffer zone between the beach and the apartment, with nice green grass as well.
Beach access is one of the best and this part of the beach is also one of the better in SPI.
We have not found a better place to stay in SPI. It is an older complex build in 1984, but they try really hard to keep it in shape, which is hard in this climate. Individual Units differ, all the ones we stayed in were nice and clean.
We liked Unit 721 best, Unit 722 is also great. Both have an excellent terrace and a big balcony, with Unit 721 having sun all day long on terrace or balcony.
If real estate prices keep dropping we might even buy there. It is that good.
Unique Quality: Everything... just look at the pictures. We really like this place ...
Directions: Almost at the beach, but a nice walk through a very nice, small, and green Sunchase Beachfront to beach and you get to use their pool/hottub/deck as well!!!!
Sunchase IV is separated from the street by Sunchase Mall. So perfectly located ;-)
Very beautiful, well-maintained condos. Friendly, hard-working staff.
Unique Quality: ALL bedrooms face bay (rather than most condos where some bedrooms face a dreary hallway with no view) with its gorgeous sunsets and all living areas face the gulf with its beautiful sunrises and simply gorgeous full moon reflection on the gulf.
All condos have washer/dryer.
Directions: Not too far from causeway (left) and behind Sunchase Mall (on right side of Padre Blvd.)
we are planning on staying in SPI for a few days in early October - is the weather still nice enough for us to chill out in the beach & go swimming in the ocean? Also - any recommendations on local, non-chain hotels, b&bs, hostels, etc?

The weather will still be nice in October. You didn't mention the exact dates you'll be there, but be aware, the SPI Bikefest motorcycle rally is going on from the 9th to the 12th of October, and the island will be crowded and the rates will be higher.
A great little place to stay is South Beach Inn. It's privately owned, clean, quiet, and affordable. It's not right on the beach, but only a short walk away.

I am going down to SPI in October to for the South Padre International Music Festival (Oct 31). I discovered that due to the hurricane a lot hotels are claiming that they are "booked" but in reality they are remodeling. I recommend staying at "La Copa" (956)761-6000. They have a really nice staff. Also check out the "Suites at Sunchase" (866) 926-7711. Both of these places are on the island are have a good amount to choose from. Hope that helps!
