Transportation

by Sallyjoq

1. Can I use The Wave to get from Brownsville airport to So. Padre?
2. Do I need to rent a car to get around the island?

Re: Transportation

by TexasDave

1. No, it only goes from Pt. Isabel to the Island.

2. Once you are on the Island, not necessarily- a bike is nice- but it is quite long, not very wide, so a car is helpful, depending on what exactly you are doing.

to make your trip has hassle free as possible, its highly recommended to rent a car. Be careful of the speed traps in Port Isabel!!!!!!

Travel Tips for South Padre Island

Flip Flops vs. Mesh Water Shoes

by smh81107

If you go to the northern most point where the road ends, you will find mountains of sand. They are not easy to climb over and they are deep and powderish. There are also accassional broken glass bottles, metal bottle caps, and sharp broken seashells among other things that can leave you with a vacation war wound. Those cuts are not fun in salt water.

Tip:

Buy those mesh water shoes. They have them in most of the gift shops and they are less than $15. It's a lot safer walking around and you are not slinging sand all up your legs like when you have on flip flops.

I love picking up seashells and looking for treasure. This part of the island is a great place to do that. Plus, if you're looking for something a little less hussle and bussle and more private and romantic, definately don't miss out on this area.

It's a must when you visit South Padre, if nothing else, just to take a picture of the "road ends" sign and see the enormous sand hills. The beach at night and sunrise in the mornings

Dolphins

by Holliejo777

There are like 7 different compaines that have Dolphin watches. We went it cost about 10$ a person and you get on a boat and they take you out in the ocean and you can see lots of dolphins up close, swimming around and jumping. It was pretty cool, its about a 2 hr boat ride.

Edwin K. Atwood Park

by Stephen-KarenConn

Located at the northernmost point of island development, and about 1.5 miles north of Andy Bowie Park, this is as far as you can go on South Padre Island, at least on a paved road. Beach access allows those who dare to leave the pavement and drive 20 miles or more up the beach. Many people do just that, but one would be well advised to be properly equipped before trying it. We decided not to risk getting our rental car stuck in the sand, so we hiked up the beach from this point. Several four-wheel-drive vehicles passed us along the way. It was a lovely hike, but we were disturbed to find scattered beer bottles and other trash, including the charred remains of several campfires along the way. We saw more litter here than on the more developed southerly parts of the beach.

Andy Bowie Park is smaller than the other county parks, but does have a beachfront picnic pavilion, and a concession.

Texas' Own Fast Food Franchise

by Stephen-KarenConn about Whataburger #477

Virtually every town in Texas has a Whataburger, and most towns of any size have several. Only a relative handful of Whataburger restaurants exist in a few neighboring states, so most people from outside the area are not familiar with them.

The Whataburger chain had its beginnings in South Texas in 1950. We felt it our duty while in Texas to do as the Texans have been doing for more than half a century and have a Whataburger. We both ordered the medium #1 value meal: Whataburger, fries and drink. When I informed Sergio, the manager, that this was our first ever Whataburger experience, he told us to be seated and that he personally would make our sandwiches and bring them out to us. The burger was big and juicy and delicious. The fries and drink were typical. The service was the best I have ever had in a fast food restaurant. Sergio came by twice to check on us, offering us condiments and a refill on our drinks.

Spectacular Sunsets - Great Food

by Stephen-KarenConn about Scampis Restaurant and Bar

Our best sunset view on South Padre Island was enjoyed while we dined at Scampis. The restaurant was elegantly casual and in a slightly out-of-the-way location, right on Laguna Madre. The service was very good and the food was excellent. We splurged on the special of the evening: Buffalo Steaks and Shrimp Scampi. It was fabulous - one of the best meals we had on our vacation.
