Travel Tips for Southlake

Homecoming Mums

by VeronicaG

Mums are a Texas tradition. The first ones were designed around 1916 as corsages made from fresh chrysanthemums and decorated with a ribbon in school colors. Somewhere along the line it evolved into these dramatic, heavily decorated creations.

A basic mum consists of a ribbon flower on cardboard backing with streamers in school colors flowing from the flower. These displays can weigh up to 12 pounds requiring extra anchoring! Craft stores offer a single mum in school colors, then additional wording, ribbons, sports affiliations or symbols are added.

These extra trinkets begin at $.59 and can run a high at $5.99 each. The mums complete package can tally $75.00-over a hundred dollars for the more ornate creations. Boys sport arm garters that are shorter in length.

Most mums are exchanged romantically, but they can also be given as expressions of friendship. It was my first introduction to this Texan tradition and I want to thank our Southlake Journal for clueing me in.

Decked out in School Colors

by VeronicaG

Aside from demonstrating your loyalty to school and sports affiliations with Mums, another way to show SPIRIT is to decorate one's car with the traditional colors of green and white.

My neighbor invited me to my first Dragon's football game and we rode to the game in style with flags fluttering in the breeze. If you look closely, you can see several flags affixed to the doors.

Whether your enthusiasm for the football team is expressed by wearing green and white t-shirts, sweatshirts, jackets, jewelry or hats, it's evident that Southlake supports their high school sports program in a BIG way!

Southlake Football Camp

by VeronicaG

Southlake is known for its football team, the DRAGONS. Each summer a training camp is held, overseen by highschool football coach, Todd Dodge. The Dragons have only lost one game in the past 4 years, so the team is highly respected nationally.

Their Fall football camp for 7th grade and up brings boys in from all over the country. Our grandson was fortunate enough to be here when camp was held this summer.

Each morning we would carpool the boys to camp where they learned techniques and conditioning. The sessions were from 8:30-ll:30 am on some very hot days! At the end of each morning's training, the boys would huddle in a group and an outstanding athlete from their age group would be highlighted. At the end of the week, additional awards were given out. It was an exhausting week for the participants, but a worthwhile one!

NOTE: Coach Todd has moved on to bigger things at college level and I'm sure is fondly remembered.

Dragon Stadium

by VeronicaG

Southlake bursts their buttons with pride when the DRAGONS football team comes up in conversation.

The team plays in Dragon Stadium, which is pictured here. A small gift shop on the ground level offers sweatshirts, hats, stadium seats, mugs, jackets and several other items with the team logo. A team cookbook has even been produced!

Team morale has to be sky high from the support it receives from the community. When we first moved to the area, we were advised that when the DRAGONS played...shops and restaurants emptied out because everyone and their uncle was at the game.

There are times when this actually seems to be the case--with the exception of Christmas, when crowds of people from miles around come to Town Center to shop!

Bad Guy Marker

by VeronicaG

Friends mentioned a marker detailing a tragic encounter with infamous criminals, Clyde Barrow and Bonnie Parker that sat along Old Dove Road in Southlake, Texas.

Taking our daughter and grandson along on our search, we located the site where State Troopers Edward Bryan Wheeler and H.D. Murphy were slain after stopping to help who they thought were some "stranded motorists'. As they left their motorcylces and approached the car, shots rang out and the two were dead.

This memorial was given in 1996 by the people of Texas in thanks for the sacrifice they made to public safety.
