Travel Tips for Waxahachie
418 N. College
I think this home is stately with the dramatic peak to the left and its porch of two levels!
It was built in the Italianate Victorian style, which included a looming tower. The home was remodeled in 1889 to its present Neoclassical Revival style, characterized by two story Doric columns.
I can imagine how wonderfully a breeze cools the house in Spring or Fall as it flows beneath the shaded porch and into the rooms above and below. However, in the Summer...I don't know if anything helps! The house is painted a light shade of grey with cream trim and a bright red door. It sits surrounded by mature trees and sports two chimneys.
Laid Back and Relaxing
Waxahachie is very laid back and relaxing - at least at the weekends it is. There are restaurants and cafes around and of course a great selection of shopping of antiques and gifts. Or you can just select one of the park benches and sit in the sun.
Faire General Info
The Faire usually begins about mid April through to the last weekend of May and is only open at weekends but includes Memorial Day (Monday closest to the 26th). The gates open at 10.00am through to 7.00pm. Various shows are running right throughout the day all around the grounds. With a parade being held around midday or so of a lot of the characters.
Prices as at 2003 - Adult $16.99, Child (5-12) $6.00 but if you go to a Diamond Shamrock Gas Station you can pick up coupons which will give you $2.00 off your ticket price when you buy it. Children under 4 yrs are free. They take most credit cards, travellers cheques and even local cheques.
There are ATM machines at two locations - the Main Souvenir Shoppe and the Pecan Grove Souvenir Shoppe. Everything within the park is paid for with cash (unlike some events which make you buy coupons up front to use).
The restrooms or 'Privies' as they are called at Scarborough Faire, are plentiful and are clean and well kept. They are just port-a-potties/loo's. Everything is in theme with the festival. There are also water fountains usually just outside.
Scarborough Faire Festival.
Ennis is about 10 mins northeast of Waxahachie. There is a lot of Czech culture in Ennis. The Railroad and Cultural Heritage Museum - houses memorabilia from the days when Ennis was the hub for Houston and Texas Central Railroad. Items include a 1897 edition of the Book of Rules for train operators, photos of trains that stopped in the town and miniature replicas of the train station in its early days. Ennis is also the Bluebonnet Capital of Texas.
