This hotel was built in 1912 and named after the founder of Waxahachie (Emory W Rogers). There was once two hotels on this site but both were destroyed by fires. The wet tower roof has a roof garden restaurant with a view of the city. The East tower roof was designed for sleeping tents for those preferring the outdoor environment. In the basement was a billiard room, barber shop and a swimming pool which was supplied from a nearby hot well.

Unique Quality: It has been said some of the hotel guests were Bonnie & Clyde and Frank Sinatra. Also several major league baseball teams were headquartered here for spring training. The Detroit Tigers in 1916-17, the Cincinnati Reds in 1919, the Chicago White Sox in 1921 and the Buffalo Bisons in 1948-49. The building has been used as a bank in the movie 'Places in the Heart'. After being closed for 50 years, the hotel was renovated and reconfigured. It looks like the renovating is still continuing with a gift shop and meeting rooms to be added. The site is part of the Old Chisholm Trail. Emory's restaurant is open.

More about The Rogers Hotel

The Rogers Hotel

by VeronicaG

Sometimes it was a challenge finding Waxahachie's designated sites of importance. The Rogers Hotel was an easy target as it sat across from the Courthouse on Main street.

This four-storied red brick building of two parts embellished with Bedford stone has seen some interesting times.

Former guests include the Detroit Tigers (1917-18), the Cincinnati Reds (1919), the Chicago White Sox (1920) and Kansas City (1921). They resided in Waxahachie while being trained. If these walls could talk!

Emory W. Rogers originally built a log cabin on this spot in 1846. A hotel was established on the site by 1856 which burned. The present hotel was erected in 1911.

Hotel guests enjoyed a pleasant view of the town from a roof garden. Canvas cots were placed on the roofs on hot summer nights--a cooling breeze made sleeping more comfortable.

A hot well located several blocks away provided water which was piped into the basement and was referred to as the "natatorium". I imagine it was like taking the waters at the Spa.

Restaurants near town square...

by VeronicaG about The Chisholm Grill, The BBQ Pit and others

Although we did not eat at these restaurants, the first two* were recommended on the Waxahachie They might come in handy if you're toolin' through town on business or pleasure.

*If you want a big, juicy steak, stacked potatoes or angel hair pasta The Chisholm Grill might be what you're looking for! It is located in a historic building that originally housed a restaurant in the 1880's. (972-937-7261)

*The Barbeque Pit serves up generous portions of BBQ and sides; crispy cole slaw and mustard potato salad. It's located just a block from the courthouse and near the old jail. (972-937-3677--106 Water Street)

The Courtside Grill is across the street from the courthouse and serves as a sports bar in the town. Smoking is allowed--we stopped by but decided to look elsewhere...whew, it was smokey! (972-923-3738--200 S. Rogers St.)

Tavern on the Square is located at the Rogers Hotel and across the street from the courthouse. When we visited it was not opened. (817-551-5544--107. S. College St.)
