    Best western Canyonlands

There is one campground in the park at the end of the paved road in the Devils Garden section. It's open year round and has 52 individual sites with flush toilets and water. There are 2 group sites available for 11 people or more. Reservations must be made 4 days in advance.

The closest complete lodging facilities are in Moab located 5 miles south on Route 191. There's a wide variety of motels to chose from, most are 1 to 3 stars and prices vary according to season. Luxury type hotels don't exist here. There are a couple lodges along the river on the scenic drives some 10-20 miles from Moab.

We stayed at the Best Western Canyonlands Motel in the center of town. The visitors center is across the street. Another Best Western was just a block away. Location in town doesn't matter too much since the town is pretty small.

    Campsite
    by KimberlyAnn
This campground, which lies at an altitude of 5,200 foot is located at the far end of the Arches road. There is a 7 day stay limit. The campground is open all year, and has 52 tent and trailer sites. Note that the RV sites are for RV's no larger than 30 foot in length. Although there are no showers, flush toilets and water are available mid-March through mid-October. Chemical toilets are available in the winter, and water can be gotten from the visitor center. In the summer campfire programs are offered at the campground amphitheater. In the winter the cost of camping is at a lower rate. From March 1 through October 31 up to 30 of the individual sites may be reserved through the National Recreation Reservation System. These reservations must be made no less than 4 days ahead of time, and no more than 240 days in advance. The remaining 22 campsites are available on a first-come, first-served basis each day beginning at 7:30 a.m. at the park entrance station or visitor center. If you wish to make reservations online visit www.ReserveUSA.com, or you may phone the Reservation System at (877) 444-6777, (877) 833-6777, or (518) 885-3639.

In the summer free evening campfire programs are offered at the amphitheater. A few hiking trails begin at the campground.

The room here was very nice. There was a separate coach and small living area along with the 2 double beds. One of the most comfortable rooms on our entire trip.

Hotel has a nice size outdoor pool with an outdoor spa.

When we go somewhere, I typically don't like to stay in hotel chains because I prefer to stay in places that are unique to each individual place we visit. However, after some research I chose the Holiday Inn Express in Moab because of its location, price, and amenities. It was a very pleasant stay.

Very close to Arches National Park

The Devil's Garden Campground is the crown jewel of the National Park system. I have been lucky to camp at many of the park system's campgrounds and surely all the most noted, and I can say without much hesitation that this one is the best. Of course, if you hate the desert and glowing red rock scenery, please head to the forests of another park. You would be doing everyone a favor since thousands are turned away from this gem every year for lack of space. About the only thing missing here is showers due to lack of precious water. Sure, they could truck it in and they already do for drinking water purposes but that would increase prices and put more of a stress on the environment than need be. If you can't go without a shower for a couple days, stay in town and drive 50 miles round trip every day. Hey, at least it's a pretty drive.

Spots can be reserved and if on a tight schedule you should certainly do this well in advance as this is one very popular campground. It was a very reasonable $15 a night in the spring of 2008 but I see it's gone up to $20, still in line with many other parks with far less of a water problem. This can be done between 180 and 4 days of arrival. So, you can't call the night before and hope to get a spot. My guess is you won't likely get one 4 days ahead of time during the busy season.

If you are traveling foot loose and fancy free, they luckily have left 24 spots open to walk-in campers. You simply show up and hope there is a spot available. Obviously, people stay for more than one night and not all of the spots open up each day. My suggestion? Get there very early.

We got to the park in the afternoon and of course there were no spots. We camped at nearby Canyonlands for one night and returned at 4:30 AM the next morning. We were not the first ones there either! At 7:30 AM they informed the hundred people waiting that there were 7 spots opening up that day. We were glad we were crazy enough to get up that early. It was first come first serve after that and we got an amazing spot. It was huge and plenty big for the ten people the park allows. It was set right in the rock rock fins so we had some shade. Our tent went on a nice sandy patch high on a hill looking down at our picnic table and car. It was worth carrying everything up there, believe me. Jack rabbits and deer scurried through every morning. It was a paradise we'll never forget. If you like camping and the desert, make sure to camp here.

Stayed for a night at this motel.

Located along Highway 70 at Green River, Utah before starting off at Arches National Park the next day.

Basic motel room. A warm bed is more than enough this arid area in the middle of nowhere.

Big Horn Lodge: Simple and convenient

  • We stayed in the Big Horn Lodge for 2 nights while visiting Arches and Canyonlands National Parks. It's right in the heart of the adventure town of Moab, which is just 5 minutes away from Arches entrance. It was nice enough, and the staff was quite friendly, but it didn't blow me away. The decor was done in a rustic style, but basically it's still just a motel room.

There is a restaurant next door where you can pick up coffee to go.
    Hairdryers.

Devil's Garden is the main campground at Arches National Park. It's near the end of the main road. The main thing it has going for it is its location; it's far enough away that you don't get a lot of traffic, and it saves you a great deal of time by allowing you to get up in the morning and see the sights in the northern end of the park without having to make the 20-mile drive from the entrance.

The campground is nestled between some of Arches famous sandstone fins (see photo #2). Skyline Arch is right behind the campground, and you can quickly scramble up to it in 5 minutes or less. The Amphitheater - featuring Ranger Programmes - is right there as well.

The campground has 56 sites. IT IS NOW POSSIBLE TO RESERVE CAMPSITES AT D.G.! This is a recent development, so some older guide books may not mention it. Half of the spaces are reservable, half are first-come, first-served. There are no hookups and I don't remember there being showers either. There is water and bathrooms, though. I believe it was $14/night when I was there in 2005.

    Cabin El Grande

This combination of campground, RV park and cabin-motel is a great spot between Arches and Island in the Sky N.Ps. It's right on 191 at the 313 turnoff to Canyonlands - 9 miles north of Moab, and 4 miles north of Arches.

It's not fancy but has 20 campsites, 50 RV sites (46 with hookups), 13 cabins (8 deluxe with water, bathrooms and air - 5 without), a campstore, gas station, laundry, showers and a pool. We ended up in the largest cabin (El Grande) - which will sleep at least 6-8 people. There are two pull-outs in the living room and two doubles in the loft. The kitchen has a 'fridge, microwave, stove and assorted cooking utensils, and the bathroom is large and has a shower and towels (no tub). Also air conditioning, fans, (bad) satellite TV and a picnic table. Very quiet at night and reasonable at (updated price 2008, $97) or so (smaller cabins run less). Good choice for large families or groups.

This place was completely packed the 3 days we were here.

Good location between Arches and Canyonlands Island in the Sky district). Reasonable rates. Convenience groceries and gas on site. Quiet at night (the main drag in Moab can be pretty noisy).
