Travel Tips for Provo

sbfisher's new Provo Page

by sbfisher

Provo is in a spectacular setting in a valley with mountains on all 4 sides. Utah Lake is to the west of town with mountains behind it.

Provo is located in the middle of Utah Valley--The valley just to the south of the Salt Lake Valley. Downtown Salt Lake City can be reached in about 45 minutes by car.

A main feature of Provo is Brigham Young University--an LDS religiously-owned university with enrollment of around 30,000 students. Utah Valley State College is located nearby in Orem, Utah. During the school year, there are approximately 50,000 college students in the valley.

Because of the predominantly LDS population, Provo isn't a typical college town and you will have a hard time finding any night life or social activities. Finding items such as bars, clubs, pubs etc. in Provo will be difficult. If you're seeking these types of activities you'll find more to the north in Salt Lake City.

You will most likely need a car in order to see very much of Provo or Utah Valley. Although public transportation exists, it runs infrequently and only goes between a limited number of areas.

The people in the valley are generally friendly, many speak foreign languages (due to the fact that many LDS men and some women have gone to foreign countries on 2-year LDS missions), motel/hotel rates are reasonable and the shopping is generally less expensive than in many cities in the US.

The food and dining in the area range from awful to quite good and most restaurants are relatively inexpensive.
