Looking for a Camping Experience

by Solitary_Traveler

I'm Moving to utah in a few months and I want to know where the best camping experince would be. What I like to see are the Arches, but I don't know where they are. Also I would like to know the best trails to hike. I don't know the area yet, but I am looking forward to going to Utah.

I want this kind of info-

-The best trails in your own experience and the sights to expect

-the terrain of the trail and how far you hiked

-The best fishing spots

I know I want to go out to the many trails out there in Utah. I just love to hike and survive in the wilderness. Any suggestions?

just go to Moab. it is the play capitol of utah. Arches national park and Canyonlands are right there. Famous mountain bike riding, rafting, kayaking rock climbing, canyon exploring, back country skiing. the list goes on. they have a web site. start there and everything will fall into place. Keep in mind it is very hot in the summer.

best of luck

If you love the outdoors then you are in for a treat. Utah has so many wonderful hikes/trails, etc. Arches is one of our favorite places to visit. I like to start out early (say 6:00 am) and hike the Double "O" Arch, and after that hike to Delicate Arch. The hike to Double "O" is beautiful and if you are up that early you won't have any other hikers to spoil the scenery and the amazing quiet that you'll experience. The hike to Delicate Arch is a little more strenuous, but it's a MUST.

Another area that you may want to consider if you are a major hiker is Timpanogos up in Utah County (around Provo area). The hike to Timpanogos Caves is a beautiful hike (paved....although very steep), and then there is the hike up to the top of Timpanogos. You'll likely run into moose, and other wildlife.

Good luck and enjoy the hikes!

You would be hard put to find a place in Utah that is not a good camping experience. If you will be in SLC then the Wasatch mountains almost outside your door have camping and hiking galore. Try Tanner Flat Campground and then hike to White Pine or Red Pine in Little Cottonwood canyon...or go a little further to the Albion Basin Campground and hike to Cecret Lake or over Catherine Pass. But you will find those campgrounds are popular and must be reserved.

Then for a little further excursion go to the Uintahs. Head toward Park City and then Kamas and then the Mirror Lake Hwy will lead you into forest. Before going buy a trail guide there are just too many to name. And yes lakes galore in which to fish.

The best fishing is highly debatable, but most will say Stawberry Resevoir is among the best. You can camp there, though not too many hikes.

Then we head south where you will find the Skyline drive along the tops of the mountains including Manti Lasal forest and Fishlake forest. One of my fishing friends claims the lakes here to be the best. Lots of camping and 4wheeling. Check out Joe's resevoir and Fishlake.

These are close to Capitol Reef NP which has great camping and hiking and is close to Boulder Mt/Aquarius Plateau where my friend from southern Utah fishes.

Then there are the hikes in Zion of which one is a top ten world hike- The Narrows.

You want camping and fishing,,,,head to Lake Powell superb scenery along with the rest.

Moab area (4 hours from SLC) is outdoor adventure captiol, lots of hikes, arches, red rock, good camping in the La Sal mountains nearby.

Those are just the highlights.

Welcome to Utah

I'm a northern Utah girl so I can tell you a bit about the mountains. Southern Utah certainly is nice but it's so hot. I think the best day hikes are in American Fork Canyon. It runs from Alpine Ut over to Provo Canyon. It goes right by Sundance Resort. There aren't a lot of hikes up there but they're beautiful and doable in a day.

The best long hikes are just about anywhere in the Uintahs. We go up Hwy 150 out of Kamas to the Mirror Lake Hwy area a lot because it's easy access but the best hikes are further away. Take any dirt road up into the range that runs north from Hwy 40 around Duchesne or Roosevelt or come down south from Wyoming on the other side. My favorite place is up above Mtn Home at Moon Lake.

There are tons of books out there about the hiking trails of both northern and southern Utah. Once you get here shop around and find one about the areas you're interested in.
