Skiing around SLC
by gamma28
I'll be bringing 4 avid teenaged skiers to SLC in March. They are all really good skier/snowboarders. We want to buy the Super Pass but don't know which of the ski areas close to Salt lake City are the best. Any suggestions?? Also, we're staying at the Crystal Inn at West Valley Center- any comments?? Thanks

Well all the ski areas are great. Alta does not allow snowboarders. Brighton is considered the snowboarders home. Snowbird has great terrain options. Solitude is big and usually less crowded. How long are you staying? Get a 4 day pass and try them all
Crystal Inn West Valley is a little far away, but close to the freeway so won't take you that much longer. You might be able to catch a Grizzlies hockey game at the E Center right next door. The area there has lots of restaurants and shopping nearby. There is also a Crystal Inn in Midvale (or maybe it is called Fort Union) that would be lots closer, less busy area, still within a mile of shopping and restaurants.

You might want to go to Solutide for snowboarding. The skiing should be great in March. We just went at New Years and it was snowing quite a bit. Some other skiers (we went to Alta) said this area has the best skiing (they had been to Park City).

Oh, one more tip - I'm not familiar with the super pass but there is a ski shop I posted on my SLC tips that sold ski lift tickets at a discount. Might want to check that out.

I understand that you can walk from the Ramada or the Crystal Inn. I haven't stayed at either place.

It is always difficult to know what inexpensive means. If you are looking for a low cost national chain such as Ramada or Crystal Inn, they are about a 15 minute walk from Crossroads or a 5 minute walk to the light rail station which will take you there. If you are looking for something closer, there is a Best Western across the street from Crossroads 801-521-0130. There is also a Marriott attached to Crossroads and a Hilton and a Wyndam close. The Inn at Temple Square is on the same block and is a nice place.
hotels (w ski package) big cottonwood canyon rd

I'm visiting slc march 14-18 for 3 days of skiing/snowboarding with 2 other guys. We rented a house on a previous visit using the bus service to the slopes. With only three of us we're thinking a hotel would be a more economical option. I've checked prices at Crystal Inn and a Best Western and they are comparably priced. Looking for any input/advice for these or other hotels in the area. Plan to use bus service and walk to resturants for meals. Thanks for any help. John

We stayed at Best Western Garden Inn and it was really cheap with entertainment card which you can buy at entertainment.com
Check with them first to see if they have "entertainment rate" available and if they do, buy a membership, it will pay for itself the first night.
And it was a nice hotel

We are planning to ski at the resorts up Big Cottonwood Canyon, Solitude, Snowbird etc. I'm looking for a hotel, in town, on the main road heading up the Canyon. Thanks, John

Discovery Inn is nice. Right by the track station where the ski bus will pick you up - and you'll have access to going anywhere along the trax. They also sell the Super Passes at Discovery ($43 for a complete lift ticket - including chairs & trams). The ticket is good for Snowbird, Alta, Solitude & Brighton.
Travel Tips for Salt Lake City
Fry Sauce
by Segolily
You might be asked at a restaurant (mostly fast food ones), "would you like fry sauce?" I grew up on fry sauce and thought everyone had it, but apparently not. You eat it with fries and I highly recommend it instead of ketchup. It is a combination of ketchup, mayo and a variety of flavoring. Try it, you might get hooked.
Bookstore like you dreamed of
by ZIMETMUS
Sam Weller's Bookstore is one of the gems of a retail establishment that you wished was in your own neigborhood. Selling new, use, out-of-print and rare books, you've got lots of books to browse through, sit and enjoy or query the staff for recomendations.
Highly recommended!
Horse and Carriage
by grandmaR
My grandson was uninterested in this, but we did take some photos of the horse-drawn carriage tours which go from South Temple at the south gate of Temple Square. There is a total weight limit - generally they can seat 4 adults and 2 small children. Rides vary according to what locations are visited and vary between $50.00 and $80.00 for the whole group.

Fancy Restaurant!
by GracesTrips about Metropolitan Restaurant
Our first dining experience in Salt Lake City. This restaurant was in the top ten recommended on opentable.com and did not disappoint. The ambience was very sophisticated. I ordered the Utah trout and my boyfriend ordered an Elk entree. The dessert was one of the specials of the evening, a chocolate molten cake with caramel sauce. I, myself, don't really care for caramel so I asked not to have it on the cake. Yummm, it was absolutely delicious. The best part of the meal was the dessert!
Arches National Park
by crazyguitar
What to say about that amazing park, amazing mountains, shapes, rocks...
My suggestion: Go there in winter! The contrast of the red-sand and red-rocks with the snow is superb!
